    Weird Google Shift

Has anyone else that pulls hearty traffic via Google noticed a drop in numbers? I'm talking about Google search traffic, not the pay by click Google ads. The last four days have been disasterous for us, and when I studied my referring traffic stats I noticed a huge portion of our normal Google traffic (that's been consistent for years) was gone.

Any Google experts here? Would appreciate your opinion.

Of course I knew that they'd "danced" and updated -- but I was wondering if anyone was aware of other kinds of logarithm changes or policy shifts, etc.

Have you checked the actual SERPS? Are you no longer ranking for queries that you use to rank for? or is it just a drop in traffic?

If the latter is the case..think about it

What are SERPS? And to answer your question: both. Queries and drop in traffic. My site is based on a successful blog format, with actual articles and features and blog posts bringing in a good amount of traffic from Google. But as of the other day it's like Google put up some sort of filter that shut out search results to our random blog pages. Formerly those pages brought in a decent amount of random traffic.

It's incredibly frustrating and a bit frightening -- should this be their new format and filtering system. My site is eight years old, so it's not like I'm a newbie, crying about a recent Google dance. It's just that in the past the shift hasn't wrecked havoc so hard on my traffic.

Depends on how popular the site is. Sites like CNN will get updated more than once a day. When I make changes to my site I usually notice the update in Google in about 4-5 days.

Serps - search engine rank placements (or some variety of that)

There has been a major update to the algorithm in addition to the regular daily updates Google does - they screwed it up about two weeks ago and dumped a really bad corrupted database into the results - they had to pull that one back two days later - then a few days ago they tried again with a doubling of the pages in the index - and it looks like its sticking - but it doesnt look like theyve applied to many of their filters yet

Substantial. Enough to get drunk over and cry in my beer last night. I'd say about a third of my traffic evaporated. Brutal.

serps dont drop by leaps and bounds everyday , they shift around a bit , but when your traffic drops by a noticeable amount its usually a ban or an update. and indeed there has been an update/algo change.

Is there a way to type in your url and see under what keywords and what ranking under those keywords you are at?

Linking to banned domains, buying/trading links on non related sites, having the same blog articles as 20,000 other people, too many out links in relation to the amount of text on the page.

I could go on.. but I wont.. hehe

I track it using a few programs I had written 4 years ago as well as just simple things like picking a phrase that I know I will usually rank pretty well with and watching the number of results Google reports when you type in the search - one that Ive used for years is the word "sex" (although they censor that search in the US/ English results now). For years the results showed 70 million results - then last year they started their "BD" changeover and it jumped to 300 mill results - two weeks ago it went to 3 billion results - and now its back down to 400 mill

The filters can be seen when they are applied by adding &filter=0 to the end of the resulting url when you type in a search - this will show all the sites being filtered out for dupe/ban etc
There are 100s of filters in the algorithm that can be "tweaked" based on incoming links, authority of the sites, titles, descriptions and on and on.
