    network neutrality

Anyone hearing about this? Congress is being lobbied by the same companies that gave into the Bush Admin to give internet and domestic phone records to the NSA for surveillance, have now gotten a special deal where they can syphon off funds from webmasters in order to get higher priority. These companies; Verizon, AT&T and BellSouth have sold out for money so this means they'll probably bend to the Admin's request to make sure that only "Family Values" oriented sites get access. Internet users might find it increasingly difficult or outright impossible to get access to adult sites. I'm working with MoveOn.org to stop this ridiculous plundering. Go to their website for more info.
This, along with Albert Gonzalez's need to have us all post our addresses and be in front of our file cabinet from 8-6 in case they want to stop by and check our documents, is making it more difficult for some of us. I'd appreciate any feedback.

    Excerpt:
    ***
The U.S. House of Representatives definitively rejected the concept of Net neutrality on Thursday, dealing a bitter blow to Internet companies like Amazon.com, eBay and Google that had engaged in a last-minute lobbying campaign to support it.
By a 269-152 vote that fell largely along party lines, the House Republican leadership mustered enough votes to reject a Democrat-backed amendment that would have enshrined stiff Net neutrality regulations into federal law and prevented broadband providers from treating some Internet sites differently from others.

Of the 421 House members who participated in the vote that took place around 6:30 p.m. PT, the vast majority of Net neutrality supporters were Democrats. Republicans represented most of the opposition.

In fact the phone companies DID have something to do with this. This was a trade off for the NSA getting phone and internet records for surveillance. Shit is getting weird. The whole world seems to be going insane. I just start making money in this business and now this. Anyone remember that show "Sliders"? I'm wishing it were possible to "slide" into an alternate reality with a little sanity.
Anyway, I'm doing what I can to put a stop this legislation.

This is one of the few things I am NOT concerned about. This is going to fall flat on its face.

Most young people, once they find that they cannot download thier MP3s super fast from BitTorrent and thier porn is slow too, will drop thier broadband services and move to competiting providers. You'll also see a boom in wireless ISPs, since the ILECs control who has accesss to the PSTN.

Thats why most people have internet service: porn, e-mail and bittorrent.

Old farts, prudes and religious fruit cakes will keep thier SBC/Yahoo DSL accounts and thats fine and dandy, fuck them anyway.

You just shot your cause in the foot. MoveOn.org is a front for the communist party and represents many of the more evil concepts to grace this country in the last century and I will have no part in working with them on any issue. A good many people feel the same way I do about this. There are plenty of orgs fighting in favor of NN, why not align with one that has bi-partisan appeal?

would this proposal bottleneck d/l's at the ISP level or on internet backbone levels? if it's the latter (I suspect it is), switching ISP's wouldn't change anything

Yep they were the one behind all of this. I've been keeping up on this issue for quite awhile. Phone companies say "Don't worry even wiothout net neutrality we won't block anyones access or slow down access to sites" Now excuse me if this is true then why be against Net Neutrality? If you aren't going to do these things then Net Neutrality laws don't affect you since you aren't planning to do the thing Net Neutrality laws are mean to prevent.

Actually moveon.org and the NRA belong to the same orgnaization that is trying to stop this. Now when these two agree on something you know something is fucked up.

I've been calling my senators. Yes, we can block this. Someone told me something they heard someone say on TV about Jeb Bush being president in the future. Bush Sr. for four years, Clinton for 8, Bush Jr. for 8, Hillary for 8, Jeb for 8. Time to break up this two family dynasty. Move.On is not communist, that's absurd. MoveOn is progressive. Who's against progress? MoveOn is one organization that gets off its ass and encompasses a wide political spectrum that includes Libertarians like myself, Green Party, Democrats and disaffected Republicans. It's a wide umbrella of political attitudes that all agree on some issues. The fact that this group is working along with the NRA and the Christian Coalition just shows how much unity people can embrace when they realize that they're being collectively sold out. I've never seen anything in this group that embraced Communism. No one's quoted Mao or anything but I agree that this legislation might actually backfire on the phone/ISP companies that buy into it. The public will possibly switch to other providers who will give them what they want and expand with the increased income. That makes sense and is highly probable. Iin the meantime, I'm going to continue to ally with those that want to end this. It's a good way to bring new ideas and debate to this polarized, two part system and get all of us who have more in common than we realize to bring the country back to true democracy. Otherwise it's going to require relocation to someplace like Holland or wherever, someplace that hasn't gone insane yet.
