i'm sure you all know this sucks for a few reasons.

Here's another pain in the ass with XP. If you send or get an email that has the following attachments using Outlook XP, Outlook will block them. You have to hack the registry to fix it. There is no switch unless you are on Exchange Server!

It's part of teh MS trial where they were ordered to phase out 'java' over 7 years since thy stole the idea from Sun. Sun will have a plugin undoubtedly! Netscape news has a news article on it today.

there's a lot of web apps that won't work anymore. i know that lots of my scripts (and 3rd party scripts) won't work without java. nobody ever cared before, as non-java users were an insignificant amount. it would suck hard if 50% of the internet was java-disabled.

MS are a little pissed at Sun i would say!

So, you are saying you didn't open any attachments and you didn't open the email. You got a virus from viewing a message in preview mode? Was it an HTML enabled email?

Microsoft is going to be dropping Java support not JavaScript. They're two entirely different creatures. Things like pop-ups, mouse-overs etc use JavaScript.

For Java Applets, Sun have a plug-in for IE which is better than the MS VM anyway.

BTW I've had a similar spam message eMailed to me that automatically invoked a JavaScript just by clicking on the message. Luckily it didn't have a virus attached - it just opened up my browser to a banner farm.

I hope Java dies. I was really excited about it in '95... then I found out that it really wasn't all it claimed to be. Not only was it not platform independent, but the fact that it was based on OOP didn't mean a fucking thing because you have to have the right JDK to make anything work. And Java applets always seem to be sloooooow -- only the most simple applets didn't fuck up or crash.

I was the biggest supporter of Java even before there were many supporters -- but really now I think it sucks and I hope it finally dies. Look how long it's been and it still hasn't caught on -- that should tell you something. Java SUCKS!

Sure javascript is cool -- but that's not really java. I've coded a few java applications, but I probably would have been much better off writing those programs in Perl or C++. I'm sure Java has a few useful applications on the server side -- or with "devices"... but really Java has fallen short.

The whole "dream" of Java was to make the operating system (ie: Windows) less important -- by making all software open and platform independent, allowing any programmer to code for anyone and everyone -- all at once -- and be able to distribute that program over the internet seamlessly... Then you could have java devices that could plug into the internet and you would have access to any piece of software that you would ever need -- and this would replace most of the need for a hard drive also. Before Java, IBM and Apple were secretly working on something called Opendoc. I tested it on some of the fastest PC's that IBM had at the time -- but it was so fucking slow and buggy -- just like Java! Damn we need some kind of Java killer/replacement...??? Either that or just add some more features to HTML and we will probably be fine for at another decade ;)

I'd agree with you if it was '95 but this is '01 - have you actually done any Java development lately? Java has come a long way from the days of cute browser applets. I'm no Java evangelist and I know Java has its faults but there are certain things Java does better than anything else. I know of no other OOP language that has so much support and is so portable. For example, I develop on W2K and deploy on Linux without even needing to re-compile - first time, every time.

I find it intriguing that you say "(Java) hasn't caught on". Ever heard of companies like Oracle, IBM, Sun, HP ? ? Ever done a 'java' keyword search at any on-line job database? Ever seen how many Java books there are out there?

I don't want to turn this into a pissing match but I just needed to set the record straight.

altasexa, i know the (technical) difference between java and javascript, but i thought sun owned them both??? i guess i jumped the gun by grouping them together like that. i don't care for java at all, but java-script makes my life easier. also, about the email, i didn't even click my msg! as titmowse said, i just previewed it as a scrolled by it!

i just checked, sun does own them both. "JavaScript is a registered trademark of Sun Microsystems, Inc." can we be sure that it's only java they are talking about?

The preview pane in OUTLOOK EXPRESS literally does "open" your Email while you are "previewing" it ...

Case in point ... embed something like a console within an email message, and send it to yourself - when you get it back, and "preview" it... the console pops up!

The only known workaround to this is to disable reading emails as HTML - force OE to only read text messages ... or have Norton Antivirus send all your emails to their servers for a quick scan before sending them on to you

MS doesn't have anything against JavaScript just Java. Their Scripting Server and ASP both support JavaScript extensively and the HTML DOM would be useless without it.

They'd be crazy to cripple IE by dropping JS since it's so closely coupled with HTML these days. If they do drop it, I'll be rushing out to buy Netscape shares

like was said above. i never accept email in HTML format. besides it just stuffing my email, there's the danger of all sorts of java-script tricks. that's why i wanted to know if the message you scrolled was an HTML page.

Maybe these are the extensions I was talking about in a another topic... anyway, isn't it better that emails are blocked with attachments containing this crap? I mean, if you really want to send someone a program, then zip it up and send it that way, save some bandwidth and space for christ's sake. Why the fuck not? I don't believe there is any reason attachments of that type needs to be attached to an email...

Any thoughts people?

(BTW, I think I got a .hta attachment with an email once that installed itself. The little bugger was good, it hid itself very well, until I removed the association for .hta files, and the next time my computer rebooted, the OS asked me what fucking program I would like to use to open virus.hta (i cant remember the name, it was something.hta). Ha ha, got 'em!)
