VERY basic question about adwords

If you edit ANYTHING on your keywords, does it have to back into review before the changes are made?

or is it instant?

Instant, but will get reviewed.... At least I think

Instant unless you add any words that trigger a stop - A least thats been my experience.

Only if you change the url on a keyword or change the title and description.
