Anyone else own an Alienware computer?

I had an awful experience with them and was wondering how common that was. For the money it cost to get the system I was very disappointed in their customer support and attention to detail:

It started with them sending the wrong components.

10 months later the motherboard burned out and they fought with me to send me a new one and sent me one finally with a cracked memory slot.

They've always been nasty on the phone. Very poor. I was considering shotting a video of me blowing the box to bits with my shotgun and posting it online just for the effect. =]

Use a quarter stick to do it, i've seen someone blow up a old computer with a quarter stick...it was fucking amusing. We laughed for an hour, peices of computer everywhere, the casing it self was almost ripped apart & blackened from the explosion

      Good fun for all

Mark, we were going to give a few of their systems away as prizes and finally decided against it. Kinda happy about that now.

Isn't it possible (and more economical) to just build a system to the same specs they do?

Overpriced geek version of designer lable clothes IMO.

Heard nothing but bad things about them.

You can always build your own but if you want all the cool stuff like anondized aluminum cases, windows, etc, you'll end up paying a pretty penny, anyway.

Yeah... I think I got label ego and did a stupid thing there. =]

I've got a couple home builts too and they work great. I've had Dell, Gateway, Alienware and home made. Dell and Gateway I've been very happy with. Home is usually great too. I'm in the process of trying to put together a network gaming/cybercafe and wanted to go all with one brand and originally had the idea having a boutique system like Alienware might pull in more clients. That was part of the decision making process too... Good thing I tried one first!

'bout two years ago, they did have a better reputation as they were not as commercialized as much...

...and i do believe they were bought out by some other company if memory serves me right...

in any case, yes, there products no longer carry any weight more than a compaq or gateway...

which is just pure shite in my opinion anyway...

building a system from scratch...or even starting out with a barebones system to start would be a better way...

Got an Alienware about 3 years ago, loaded to the max, and although it was a screamer (at the time) I always was having some sort of problem with it due to the way they set it all up. After that I started buying Falcon Northwest, and they rock. The customer service is awesome and I've had no problems at all with the 3 that I have that weren't my own doing.

I was going to get an AlienWare but then decided to build my own pc.

It cost me $3000 to build but it would of cost me like $4000 for the PC I wanted from Alienware (SCSI SCSI SCSI)

I have been looking at www.ABSPC.com and they're prices look a lot lower than Alienware. Plus they offer the same damn cases they do (minus a bunch of alienware colors).

I would be interested in what anyone has to say about them as well.

i dont want to sound like spam or anything but i was looking for a new comp and i wanted to build it exactly how i wanted it but i was worried i would fuck something up so i looked around and found ibuypower.com. these dudes built me an awesome computer for pretty damn cheap with 3 year warantee and all.
P4 2.53 ghz with 1 gig ddr 3200 and geforce 4 a128mb all that shit, cdrw, dvd, aluminum case like 1300 something, all name brand shit. i thought it was pretty decent, not much more expensive if i wanted to buy all the parts and put it together myself and plus i got a warantee. anyways, much better than the alienware pc's that cost like 3k

Makes the good point that knowledge is power. Yeah anyone can buy the components... but who KNOWS how to put them together? Not difficult, I agree... but it's also not difficult to change a carburator on an old car and how many people paid for that? =]

Not difficult, I agree... but it's also not difficult to change a carburator on an old car and how many people paid for that? =]

Come on.. there is a huge difference between changing a carburator and changing a video card, not a very good example. My guess is that the non-techies are more likely to buy a "Dell" than an "Alienware" computer.
