    Question about ISP's

Just got off the phone with verizon dsl and he said something interesting to me.
He complemented me on my system setup and on my computer name. I asked
how he knows that and he said he could see it thru there network. He also said
that they can see what packets are sent and received. Is this something new?

He wouldn't be able to see your system details unless you have something installed on your PC that provides them with that data. Many ISPs nowadays use such software to assist in troubleshooting and reduce the volume of calls they receive.

As for the system name, I know that it can be passed to the ISP and seen in DHCP logs. I'm not sure, but I guess the same could hold true for PPPoE logs.

Very interesting. I doubt that Verizon could find out what you are doing just through normal service providing.

As for seeing what packets are sent and received, I just find that hard to believe. Usually you can get a rough idea where you packets are heading (i.e. what AS number) but otherwise, I find it hard to believe that they are tracking every packet.

Of course, I may be wrong since I typical deal with bandwith in the Gigabits and not anything smaller.
