    Licensing Information Needed...

So let me get this straight.
A content provider owns the copyright to the content and sells licenses for the content to webmasters, right?
What kind of licenses are there? What would you call a license that allows any type of use of the content?
    thanks!

Most licenses have specific useage terms. For example, only so much can be used for this part of your site, can't be used in print advertising, etc.

It all starts with the models who sign a release relinquishing control of their image to the photographer who then can either sell the content outright to someone who has hired him to do the shoot, or he can have his own content site to license it out, or he can license it through a content broker.

now what would you call a license that allows any type of use (print, websites, etc)? A full license? Unlimited license?

          another question...
if the photographer does not have the original photo or the negatives, how can he prove the picture is his? what if pic was taken with a digi/web cam?

          (edit)
also, whoever holds the copyright the content ultimately decides how the content is used, right?

That's the problem with proving who owns the rights now that we live in a digital world. In the old days whoever had the negatives and chromes you knew pretty much was your man. Now with all the digital stuff there is no way to tell except seeing the original model releases, and such.

Its a really, really big problem with ownership. I've had incidents where we bought content and had photographers claim it was theirs when it wasn't. There was a guy a few years back that was sending out e-mails to tons of webmasters threatening lawsuits if they didn't pay him a license fee. Some webmasters fell for the scam and paid this fucker. He knew if he sent out a zillion e-mails someone would fall for it and they did.
