    Google's New Algorithm

THIS pisses me off. Its gonna rip us off just like the google image search did when it launched.....

    Google?s new Algorithm
    April 11th, 2006
A new text search algorithm is on the horizon. It?s true the rumor has finally been confirmed! Orion was created by a 26 yr old PhD student from the University of New South Wales, Ori Allon, is the latest addition to the Googleplex in Mountain view California.

The concept is wonderful, what possibilities exist for search? but how will this effect the way Internet Marketers and SEO?s do their job? How will this effect, visits, click throughs etc? Read on?

?Take a search such as the American Revolution as an example of how the system works. Orion© would bring up results with extracts containing this phrase. But it would also give results for American History, George Washington, American Revolutionary War, Declaration of Independence, Boston Tea Party and more. You obtain much more valuable information from every search.?

Brilliant! I?m sure this will help gather information more rapidly! Streamline the process? but here?s something else to think about from a Marketers angle -

?The idea of finding information without having to click through to websites came from Allon?s supervisor, Eric Martin, back in March this year. ?I provided the spark. But it is Ori who has developed this through his amazing creativity and sheer hard work over these past months,? said Mr Martin.?

?The results to the query are displayed immediately in the form of expanded text extracts, giving you the relevant information without having to go to the website - although you still have that option if you wish? explained Ori Allon.

?Without having to go to the website? - that?s what bothers me? I?m sure there will be a way to code the site so that Orion doesn?t index you. But then what does that do to your rankings? And what implications does this have on the old Google saying ?Content is King? ? I can?t wait to get my hands on a demo version!
Want to accept Bitcoin (BTC) on your site without any issues? I modestly estimate a 15%-20% boost in conversions.

Yes, but what is also true is that Webmasters will be able to display these extracts on their own pages and sites. It's really neat.

That'll rock, I'll ad the extracts to my site, get indexed by google for those terms, and the visitors can read the extract right in an extract on google without ever clicking to my page and making me money.

It's going to shrivel up and the INSANE growth of the Google Affiliate Network will come to an abrupt stop.

Sounds like free samples, could be cool. I think it will check all the fake sites that try to cheat the engine. I mean the ones that make no since and then re-direct the traffic. Why would you visit a site that makes no since in the insert.

For surfers it will be cool, they will be able to more easily find information they need, for webmasters though, I don't really see any benefits...

google seem to think taking money from other pockets to benefit themselves is fine and dandy

I think it will even hurt them. If surfers don't have to click to read what's on the page then google gets less page views as well. Also those sites that are put up exclusively for adsense will quit getting views / clicks. They would have to pick up a lot of slack on their own adwords or entice a lot of new users to benefit it would seem.

Sounds like a fantastic idea; it means that you can pick up hits for near keywords as well as exact keywords. Basically, if you have relevant content and aren't trying to game the search engine, it'll work in your favour.

                                        Hello,

I already pick up hits for near keywords. That is the magic of a popular site that gets backlinks in all forms.

Right - so you'll pick up more hits, and less popular sites that don't have those backlinks but are just as relevant will pick up more (since there'll be less frustrated users who can't find anything at all). I don't think people will stop clicking through to a web site just because they see a few more words of text beforehand - particularly when they're looking for adult stuff!

I firmly believe this will result in a much lower CTR to the websites, since we can't control which snippets Google will display, ergo have zero control over "pulling" the surfer into our sites.

This may, however, pre-qualify the hits to our sites much better too, meaning the surfer does get what he expects. In which case he/she may be more likely to buy.

Overall, I can imagine the amount of traffic Google generates to other sites to drop, regardless of the amount of searches. If the algorithm proves to be very efficient, you may well see a VERY significant drop in traffic to any sites ranking lower than #1. Which, in turn, may cause AdWords bids to go up, as that would be the only way people can control the advertising text, along with the possibility to rank above #1.

They should be sued for millions for this systematic theft.

If your page is relevant, filled with text and what the surfer wasnt to see, this may actually help. Your surfers will be more targeted. While CTR will drop, I'd expect to see better ratios if this works as designed.

I'd rather see signups as opposed to burned bandwidth anyways.

I'd rather notice it 3 months later and slap a lawsuit on google.

Google is already forcing competitors (who are active in an over saturated market like porn for example) to link to each other's sites wich goes into normal business rules to get decent rankings on it's engine.
This new thing will even result in more traffic shifting. Could be good for small sites but not for the bigger ones.

For anyone still thinking about this, it will help you to understand what this is all about when you know that this is version 2.0 of this (which failed):
"While Google billed the feature as an easier way to gather related information, some Web publishers and technology analysts were quick to criticize AutoLink. They compared it to Microsoft Corp.'s Smart Tags technology that unraveled amid widespread criticism in 2001, saying AutoLink similarly changes Web content to the potential benefit of Google... more
The model just changes from cumpulsory client side to volunteer-basis, server-side.

Umm, think for a minute people.

If google generates less clicks out, which in turn generates less adwords views, well... they would lose money.

Google makes a ton of money by sending people to "relevant" sites that have little actual content but have tons of google pay per click ads on them. Google will do nothing that will negatively affect their income.

I suspect you will see this used in a VERY narrow manner, if at all.
