As far as I know Cleaner used to be the software to buy but they have not really kept it updated. I could be wrong on that though because I have not checked recently.
Sorensen is good as well. These programs pretty much use the same codecs for most things so what you are really buying is the ability to do batches. Check out Procoder.

I've heard much the same thing re Cleaner. I don't know Procoder so thanx for the tip on that one ... out'a left field, I wonder if anyone's using DeBabelizer ?
premiere for editting and cleaner for encoding... HOWEVER, if you have specific needs for format (such as ipod format or whatever) then you need to check the product you use closely and make sure that it outputs and outputs well. Google reviews for each one from the various digital editing review sites.
