Mac -vs-PC

I was at the computer store yesterday and passed by an Apple G4 Cube computer system... I know they are older, but they look soooo cool and they are on sale! So, I purchased the whole deal! This is my first mac, wow totally different! I was up most of the night playing and getting the hang of it. I bought it mainly to do photoshop stuff and prints. Now I need to find some software for it..hint hint,LOL. Anyways, hope everyone had an awesome weekend!

I personaly prever the pc but it's more a matter of what you are used to I think.
PC and Mac both work fine for most programs.

Hi Jenna,

Macs have their pros and their cons for sure. Pros would be the computing power (for PS) and the looks and the easy handling. Cons would be the price of add-ons. Well, the only Mac I would buy for myself would be either and iBook or a Powerbook G4, but they're kinda expensive. Guess I'll stick with my Dual 1Ghz machine for now

Just FYI, Apple stopped the production of the cubes because they weren't as popular as Apple wanted them to be. Maybe, if Apple knew that JJ was gonna buy one, they could have had you advertise them

Does it have MacOS X I really hope so... just because it's based on Unix and it's way better than the previous MacOS versions.

I've gone on and on about how much I hat MAC. I use both MAC and PC, and just can't stand MAC.

Jenna unfortunatley did what a lot of people do buy it "cause it looks neat-o" Hey, I guess you can polish a turd.

I use PhotoShop both on MAC, and PC, and still don't see why people say "I bought a MAC to do graphics..."

I think what I like most about MAC, is how you have to allocate RAM to programs, so forget about that annoying "multitasking" feature that PC offers.

This guy at work, convinced my boss to get a G4 (super high end) to do video editing, and everytime he switched between applications he would have to completely close one program to open another, or the whole "stable" system would lock.

Take it back before it's late.

If you really like MAC, I think they come in pink polka dot pattern now. It's the same crappy computer, but it looks so cool.

Don't feel that I'm harassing anyone. It's just that MAC users really, really, REALLY slightly annoy me.

Actually, the first computers I began learning on wayyyy back when were Mac's. I didn't even know how to turn them on, much less actually DO anything with them. One thing I really miss is Clarisworks, that program was fun man. Really fun.

That's a little extreme, but that's what we mac enthusiasts hear from the pc crowd all the time. Good Defense!! WOOHOO! You really got me there!!

Honestly, both systems have their downfalls, from the mac not being able to run the really cool web programs like thumbsplus, to the pc's clunky mouse, and silly mac ripoff operating system.

As far as Mac OS X, the bad thing about that right now is that you have to switch over to a version of an older operating system, which is unstable, because the new software hasn't been developed yet, at least I haven't heard anything yet.

So it's a toss up really, I prefer my mac, but will use a pc if it necessary, as most of the major programs run on both sytems.

But my thing is, why drive a ford pinto, when you can get your hands on a Benz?

Macs don't suck, the only people that say that haven't worked with them very much if at all.

The only thing is that they're not that great for web design because the fonts appear differently than with PCs. I wonder why Apple hasn't adapted on that, it's not like the whole planet is going to adopt their standard just becase Microsoft copied the operating system.

Too funny. Most people think Macs run Photoshop better simply because they don't set up their pc version of Photoshop or do so incorrectly.

I'll prob be blasted for this but can't resist, 12clicks hasn't had a prob with his Mac because he is still looking for the power switch!

Macs look great on TV for color in film but the software DOES cost more and why bother to have two different formats of systems to try and learn. We all know we can't even learn all the things we should with only ONE type of computer. I defy ANYONE here to say they have say 50 progs on their computer and can do EVERY thing in each program that they are capable of doing.

Macs DO suck - they are the anti-thesis of stable, multitask VERY poorly, and are counter-intuitive in a lot of ways. AmigaDOS 3 STILL kicks the crap out of MacOS 9 (I can run AmigaOS 3 emulated on my PC, so I know. ;>)

And yes, I have worked with one for long periods of time. I got used to the poor interface, bomb error icons and general suckiness.. This was a (at the time) top of the line G3 right next to my not quite so top of the line Celeron 566. The Celeron ran rings around that piece of crap Mac.

And "clunky PC mouse" - Huh? There's one pic mouse? This isn't a mac you know, there's such a thing as 3rd party peripherals. And I don't use my whole hand to press the mouse button like Mac users like to do.

Ah, there's too much - Macs suck, and the only good things they've done lately are that awesome 22" cinema display, and MacOS X, which will be the first Mac OS that doesn't suck (since it's BSD with a Mac GUI).

Personally I would have gone with the dual processor G4 Power Mac's that are out there. Amazing, expensive... but amazing.

I've just recently started dealing with my hatred towards the Mac. Thanks to group therapy, a 12 step program, sympathetic friends and electric shock therapy I am coming to terms that Mac's are somewhat useful.

Totally off the topic but anyone interested in a good movie about the whole PC versus Mac rivalry, go to your local video store and pick up "Pirates of Silicon Valley". Noah Wylie from ER is in it... good movie about how it all got started.

GM yes Macs do have uses. As someone already mentioned, doorstops, boat anchors, but we have found a great market in renting them to tractor trailer drivers that have to park on hills. They are just the right shape to fit the large tires as tire chocks and hold the truck still!

Other uses are: car stands, deck posts, and in some shallow floods you can stand on them to keep your feet dry!

Hey Jenna, you got a MAC. Enjoy it. There's plenty of Windows/MAC compatible software out there.

I tell ya, you need to go looking through some of these Sailor Moon and other teen girl anime sites that my kid is into. They're some of the cleanest, prettiest sites I've ever seen and they're all made with MACs.

Depends on what you do on your puter, but IMHO a PC will always get you further with less problems and a lot more options.

Unfortunately this isn't true. Here in production we use them as well as PC's and they're absolutely horrible to work with. You can't upgrade them and they crash every time you try and multi-task. I learned how to use a computer on a MAC and then tried a PC and in my opnion, PC's are far superior. One of the reasons why I feel that PC's are better is because MAC's tend to focus on insignificant things like the color and design of the casings, when they should be focusing more on the reasons why we use computers in the first place! My PC may not be pretty, but I can get a lot more work done on it! I know most of my co-workers here in TV Animation would agree.

Unfortunatly MAC ain't what 80(someodd)% of the surfin world is.
As a webmaster it's best to see what the majority of your surfers see.

There is one good use for that G4 that a PC can just not compare to....
...G4 then SVideo out to a Sony WEGA. Its the sharpest DVD resolution
you'll ever see from any DVD. No fuggin' jerky-vid like PCs tend to do.

Photoshop on a MAC. Sure looks good but again that jpg/gif you save
out of the MAC goes up on the Web where PC ppl load it.

If your into high quality printing and premium DVD viewing that's what you
want a MAC for, for the rest you have to jump aboard the bandwagon of
PeeCee. Software availability bar-none for PC.

Btw, AmigaDOS on those Motorola chips was great till about 1997 then the
Pentiums just got too fast and too cheap to keep running my old Amiga
A4000/040. I did buy a Picasso card and enjoyed the high bit gfx but
$600.00 US for just a gfx card...well geez-louis you got to stop and smell
the sanity sometime. The Amiga sleeps in the closet for good.

Oh...stabilty is a tweekable thing. Its how well you know your machine and OS.
MAC don't tweek very deeply like Amiga and PC.

It's such a beautiful machine... wish I had a bigger pic. Looks great next to my stereo -- looks like some kind of fancy sub-woofer... it's got a nice clean and sleek modern/futurist look. That's partially why I bought it -- that, and it was very inexpensive.

Well, I don't think Macs suck but I do think they have less functionality than the PC primarily due to the open standards set by IBM.
Apple continues to charge licensing fees for third party vendors so the machine has been slow to adopt much of the technology that make our lives simpler and faster.
If a vendor wants to make a two-button mouse for the mac then they have to pay a certain amount of money to Apple. Not so with the PC.
IBM may have made many mistakes but I think they learned from the whole MCA fiasco that licensing costs kill new technology.
For whatever reason, Apple hasn't learned that lesson yet. And revoking the clone manufacturers' licenses didn't help them win any market share.

Macs can be upgraded. You can do just about everything to your mac. My old PPC7500 runs an overclocked G3, has USB suppot and boots off a 30GB IDE drive that I installed on an ATA66 PCI card. I can run OS X if I feel like it, but I'm happy with OS9 right now.
But that's my "print" computer. I'm writing this up on the AMD Athlon system I built last year. They each have their place.

I also use PCs when absolutely necessary. (like to see what the unwashed masses see)

I am now working on building my skills in Final Cut Pro and DVD Producer Pro
