    Wired Router Question

Anyone have any experience with this router?

    Linksys - BEFSR81 - Etherfast 8-Port Cable/DSL Router

I have been using this, but I need more ports.

I plan to run 4 computer hook ups off it, and Vonage.

I have one that is working nicely. I had the 4 port version before it and the only issue that I had was a fried port. I had a port left over so I wasn't overly worried about it.

For the price, I like Linksys. There devices are easy to setup and run like a champ.

I've had too many problems with Linksys. None with Netgear.

I've had problems with the Linksys not being able to connect to DNS servers for 30 minutes after a configuration/reboot, i've had issues with the DHCP not working when the router was configured on a static IP address, built in firewall disables computers for accessing the internet and more. I've been though a dozen routers on multiple connections, all of which was returned to the store.

Picked up a netgear, pluged it in, and 15 minutes later I walked off and never had a service call for it.

If you are on a dynamic IP and have DHCP set up with the firewall off you should be ok. But don't expect it to do much more though.

Strange. My experiences are just the opposite. I've had nothing but problems with Netgear and, with the exception of one fried port, zero problems with Linksys.

i thought my problems would have been compadibility problems with the ISP, however, after switching from comcast, to choiceone, to verizon, all those problems were consistant.

i moved down here to AZ and same problems with Qwest and cox. So i have to think it's with the routers and not the ISP.

linksys routers also drop wireless connections all the time. i've been through at least a dozen routers, different stores, firmwares, models etc.

No problem at all with netgear (not their older ones)

Same here, And one of the nice things about linksys, is that they are made by cisco. and they know what they are doing.

We had a netgear router, and kept having problems with it dropping the settings, so I called support to get some help.

              The guy told me this..

We've been having a lot of complaints about that router, just between you and me, I'd go out and buy another brand

I'm sure every brand has a bad run of equipment. I bet my experiences with linksys were during that time and netgeat was running well.

why not just keep your current setup and buy a cheap 8 port switch ?

Maybe because I'm too dumb to know that is an option.

I will read up on that then, sandman, as I am basically clueless.

infecto, I am going to be using whatever adapter thingy that vonage sends me.
