iPod question

Can you use ipod nano as a storage-place for files? jpgs.
I'm pondering about buying one for my gf as a birthday present, but she is studying to become a make-up artist, and their school doesn't have internet connection.. so she would like to be able to move the pics of her practicework to the ipod and bring home to show me, and shit..
I know the cheap-usb 'sticks' can be used as such..so I assume ipod can too..but I want to know for sure

why not? it's better to buy mobile HDD, it's much cheaper...
