      3. php/perl (the web is built on these)
      4. Java (had a good run but I think its coming to an end)
      5. C# (new kid on the block that makes programming way too easy... what java should have been... [go mono!])
      6. Assembly (sometimes you need really fine control)

      743. Visual Basic (great for weekend warriors)
Got to toss in UNIX as a beautiful platform

Started as a hobby making servers, mass mailers, punters, scrollers, crackers, spammers, etc... for AOL. Learned visual basic before HTML.

Hopefully you're right. But Java development took a huge hit when Bill Joy left Sun and it really hasn't recovered. Combine that with never really getting their resource usage and portability under control, and I think those statistics are based more on momentum then anything else.

                  a blend of

                  1) comp sci classes from college, programming in C/C++.
                  2) self taught everything for web programming in perl
( easy to learn perl when you have C/C++ base to go off )

never did take a java class, but after my last year in college, all courses moved from C++ to java. *shrug*
