I've been looking at this thing for a while. I think i have an idea of how its done ... but i am still not 100% sure.

It's a great illusion though.

The surface is: 13*5= 65/2= 32,5 BUT

First image:
Green = 5
Red = 12
Orange = 7
Green = 8

SUM= 32

Second image is the same, only we have one box left blank which is 1,0

65 - 32 - 32 = 1,0

This is as far as I can get...

The two small triangles are NOT proportionally the same. The first set, the two triangles form a concave angle. The second set, the two triangles form a convex angle. This causes the blank space.

Easiest way to solve this is w/ pick's theorum

Let P be a lattice polygon. Assume there are I(P) lattice points in the interior of P, and B(P) lattice points on its boundary. Let A(P) denote the area of P. Then

A(P) = I(P) + B(P)/2 - 1

Two line solve.
