Random Image script

I'm looking for a random image script that will put 3 random thumbnails on my site that link to their proper gallery page. The thumbs should change on refresh and show new random galleries. I put a small php script on my site that could do it but ended up eating all my server resources in less than 5mins.

Any help, suggestions?

I don't see why a php script couldn't handle it, php is generally fairly light unless it's written poorly.
Is it mod_php or just running as cgi? and what level of traffic?

I have something similar around, however, it doesn't dynamically display the thumbnails. That tends to hurt your server with large amounts of traffic, so a cronjob would be a better option.

Ya I was thinking of that on my way home just now. Cronjob it to run every 2mins or so. I'd be pushing approx. 20 runs per second the other way which was bad, I shoulda learned my lesson from something else I wrote awile back.

Are there any free scripts out there that I could customize...? anyone know?

Why every 2 minutes? Isn't that still a bit much... I mean, the average surfer doesn't visit the same site twice in 10 minutes, so why force your server to update that often?

yea punkworld is right... have a look at these links.. there are scripts there where you could arrange the pics or whatever to display at random by grouping em - no need to run cron... cron is a sledgehammer to crack that peanut!

Well I have categories split on different pages therefore they will see it a few times in 10mins

I hate to bring this fag as an example but. Sexocean how the galleries rotate after every refresh, I just want 3 galleries to rotate not a million galleries that link to CP and dialers like he does.

In that case, a combo of javascript, a php script and a cronjob would be a good solution.
Cronjob runs once daily to make the php script select a bunch of pictures and cram the javascript to go with them in a file, that javascript chooses randomly from those pictures and displays a few of them.

Three galleries are a piss thru with random scripts.. totally flexible! I got well over 500 feeder sites that are almost entirely generated using random scripts - dig into em and you will see the possibilities!
