prohosters mail servers (embarrasing)

A lot of large companies use spam filtration software and prohosters (my hosts) mail servers are almost always blacklisted. I hate having to explain to clients that I can't send them email because my mail server is blocked.

anyone else have this problem and if so do you know a way around it?

Use your isp's mail server, every isp has one.

i had the same problem when i was on XXXWebhosting
a few years ago, it was amazing the amount of mail servers
that didn´t accepted my mail.

Maybe use your ISP SMTP server?

And if your on a T-1 or a DS3 ( ) without a mailserver, set one up yourself, it will connect to the clients isp mx server & send the mail directly.

*g* Know the PH problem well.. got a server there with a couple of email optin progs on it.. might as well forget em cos the mail spamming shit has screwed em totally..

Only solution is to move off the PH network... will do that when I got time! :-)

Im guessing, as I was told a while back when I was going to resell for prohosters that they could set me up with my own dns servers, so I guess I could get my own mail servers as well?

Yea but honestly man, just use your isp's mail server. If you're looking to run an opt-in program, go host with a different company, because yes...they are mad blacklisted all over the place.

Although, i think they just switched providers...so i would think they have diff IP blocks now?

Think that was the reason Verio dumped PH (spamming) .. Might be worth waiting to see if they can kill the problem with the new supplier....

sorry to be an idiot, so I would just set my smtp server to my isp, and leave all other settings the same? So I could still receive mail on my main accounts, using prohosters pop3 settings but my send mail would simply pass through my isp? correct?

I also should add that I think prohosters is a very good host, never had any other problems besides this one.

Affirmative, you only need to change your smtp field, leave everything else the same.

PH POP's seem to work OK.. tis just the problem communicating outside the PH network... tried that and still don't work! *s*

Had PH trying to "do something" for almost 2 weeks.. but boils down to what others outside their network think and who decides to ban em...

As I said before, prohosters is a good host as far as uptime goes (semi-dedicated) I never have had a problem with downtime with them and that's all that matters to me especially since I pay for a lot of my traffic. As long as there is a way around this problem, Ill stick with them.

earthlink doesnt use spews as far as i know

but ph is supposedly killin off all spammaz now so they might get un-BLed one of these days

Sure is, Brad. All you have to do is tell the SPEWS and MAPS guys that you're a good boy now, and they can and will take you off if it proves to be so.

However, it is then up to the ISPs that are using the SPEWS RBL to actually update and use the new list.

Simple solution to ProHosters: Kill your spammers, or suck it up.

I suppose I'm still learning about all that. I've never allowed spammers on my network so these things haven't been an issue yet. From what I hear, they've been cutting spammers. Hopefully Ted is able to work things out.

Email blacklisting should be a major concern if you plan on sending out legitimate email from your host.

A good way to see how spam-friendly is (a bad thing if you send legit email), check on www.spews.org for an IP they give out (use the ip of their website if you don't know of any customer's).

If it says: "This was NOT found in SPEWS.", generally that means that they are not spam friendly.

If it says: "This IP address was found in SPEWS.", generally that means they are spam friendly.

To check a little further, click the evidence file, if there are a lot of entries beginning with "0," and entries that end with any network more specific than /24 -- eg /25 /26 /27 /28 /29 /30 /31/ 32-- it usually indicates a listing for one specific customer for special reasons (usually not for spam directly, but for sites that just tend to have a lot of spam emails pointing to sites, eg freehosts).

If you see anything with a "1," entry on a network less specific than /23 (eg /22 /21 /20 /19 /18 /17 /16 ...) that is a sure sign of a spam-friendly, or just plain clueless isp, and I'd stay away.
