What do you use to get pictures out of the videos?

and what is a good software to edit videos and convert them ftom mpg/avi to asf?

and which files are the best for streaming?

Just about any video editing software will let you save frames as stills. Including Adobe Premiere.

.asf is a proprietary Microsft format. Several editing programs are out there that will let you code an .asf. Do a CNET.com search on "video editing software".

Best quality for streaming...that would depend on what your server is configured to handle. If your server has MIME capabilities for .wmv, that's probably the best way to go. You can get the Windows Media Encoder here:

just ecoded mpg to wmv and it became 3 times bigger with same quality

That doesn't make sense. Normally an MPEG will be several times larger in file size than a .wmv

For example: I have just taken an MPEG that is 5.09 mb and encoded it to a .wmv. The .wmv is 2.48 mb. Use the Session Wizard, and check the settings before you start. Choose a setting around 384kbps, which is fine for broadband users (cable/DSL).

i do the odd compression and conversion of file types on video files and all i use is Pinnacle Studio 7. wicked program and easy to use

make sure you encode the video at wmv 7 not 8, then itll be 3 times smaller instead of bigger
