OK... Depends what format you want this and if you need the complete postcode system etc.

The complete data is available from the Post Office in the UK and normally, or was, on a subscription basis where they periodically provided changes/updates. This was provided a record per line together with the corresponding town and county. I used to write software for direct marketing/mail order and used this format which allows loads more flexibility, tho can be a hassle if the postal service does not produce the correct data asap. If you want the raw data it's available from the Post Office - ask for the PAF (Postal Address File) CD. It used to cost money, but not sure of the current prices.

Alternatively there are other software houses who specialise in playing games with the PAF data and offering utlities to manipluate and use this in other software. Here's probably the main developer of "plugins" from the PAF:

Useful stuff viki and prob may be more relevant for net geo use than having to use the complete PAF

You want just part postcodes... ie like the first segment or you need the full code?

If it has to be the full code, there is no other way to get these other than using the PAF data.

It's not even possible to locate a specific postcode based on xy coordinates.. there are too many other variables, like apartments etc, within that xy.

Found the URL for details of postcoding and PAF data:

well i really want a database with the postal code that would indicate which city it corresponds to, then the longitude lattitude of that city.

There is more to this crap that you could ever think possible!

A city will have a range of "outward codes" (this is the first part of the postcode and is 3-4 alphanumerics). Example... AB1 thru AB29 is Aberdeen and this may cover more than just the "inner city" area. But.. at that point you can say it's Aberdeen. Next point is what xy's you want for this cos it covers a fairly wide area.

Depending how accurate this needs to be on both postcodes and xy co-ordinates, this will say if you need to use the actual PAF data and for co-ordinates, there is something called Postzon. But this stuff normally needs to be manipulated to get it into a usable form and can start costing money.

You may get files on the net (just been trying to find examples - no luck yet!) where someone already has merged PAF and Postzon data and created a "concise version" which may just do what you want.

BTW.. Follow this thread to the bottom - it may be worth asking for a copy of the SQL data file :-)

                            http://www.htmlcodetutorial.com/help...t=1219&start=0

Also.. here's a quick education on postcode stuff...
                            http://www.graticule.com/data/uk/pcdata.html

BTW.. Strange but true. Postcode data is not actually "public domain" and hence there is a charge for this stuff, but that can't last much longer. I've just come across a few sites that may have been offering what you want, but the pages all appear to have been pulled. This may be the reason.
