Good golly! Things like this always make my eyes hurt and I puzzle and puzzle over them. Then someone comes along and does it and I feel like a true idiot.
Thanks Amp for reminding me that any cleverness I might have had is slowly disappearing with the growth of my baby!

the idea behind that puzzle is to find out more about how your thought processes work..... when trying to solve it, do you unconsciously try to find a way to do it within the invisible boundaries of the dots? Or do you go outside the boundaries to find a solution to problems.....
a very telling puzzle indeed..... one of my favorites.

So what does it mean that I didn't think about going outside the 'invisible box'?Comment

well, I guess that you constrain yourself to working within perceived boundaries, even when there is no solution to be found there. Which is more important in the end: Staying within the boundaries, or finding the solution?Originally posted by Beastiepoo

hmmmm..... tough call....Originally posted by Zayne E.
I hadn't seen that one before...but that was cool. It's like the one Zig Z. always asks:
How many boxes do you see here?
could be 26..... could be 5.... depends on the white lines I guess. Are they required to complete a box?SIG TOO BIGComment

Ah, now that one is a bit easier. I may not be able to think outside the box but I do see enough to know that there are 30 squares in that puzzle. At least, I hope thats how many I counted...

30? Most I can get is 26.....Originally posted by Beastiepoo

yeah, I got 30 now too.... but I was initially just confused about the lines since the outside border was missing, thought it might be a trick.... lol

Nope...no trick...just scatter-brained, multi-tasking
I remember the first time I saw that one...I was totally stuck on 17....the 16 obvious ones and the big one outside. Being enlightened to the solution to that one changed the way I think about things in general...always looking for the exception, exclusion, a new way of thinking & how to look at things...going beyond perceived boundaries

Funny you should say that about thinking that it was was a trick. Back in HS when they were throwing these things as us thick and fast trying to get us to expand our minds they must have programmed into us that things are more complicated than they first appear. While this can be a good thing, I find that sometimes I do just that...confuse things by trying to make them difficult. I find that I occasionally overlook the things that are right under my nose. Very frustrating when simple things pass me by because I'm looking for the HARD answer.Comment

I guess after getting screwed enough times, I've trained myself to immediately look for "the trick".... and I can usually spot it right away. Sad to say, that was the first thing in my mind when zayne posted the puzzle.... no outside white lines? Must be a trick.
I think it's good to keep in mind that there may be a trick in things, but I agree with ya.... it takes longer to find the real solution because of that.
eh.... such is life.

I thought about that too.... but figured no one would try to pull that much of a stretch....Originally posted by Dildozer
there are 83 boxes if you consider a box not having equal sides

This is EXACTLY why I specified in my answer that there were 30 SQUARES. I'd thought about the whole 'box' thing and figured that there was NO WAY I was gonna try and count all of the 4 sided polygons with right angles at each vertex. Way too many for my little brain!

Aye, yai, yai...the troubles I have caused.
Sorry I wasn't clearer from the get-go...I liked AMP's puzzle so much I felt like just throwing another one up there real quick and wasn't clear on the object. SORRY!
I promise to do better next time

that was a good one zayne.... I just looked too deep into things that weren't there...
wish I had some more to post up, but the dot puzzle was my only one....SIG TOO BIGComment

kind of interesting results with that one too, just because of the wording... How many "boxes" instead of "squares".... and the whole white line thing too... to count those as completed "boxes" or not?
very cool actually..... I clearly have an overactive analytical side to me...
