Shooting sparks fear of ninth sniper attack
                October 10 2002

Police in a Washington suburb said today a person was shot dead at a local service station in what may be the latest in a series of sniper attacks that have left six dead and two wounded.

Prince William County police spokeswoman Sergeant Kim Chinn said the man was shot at 8:18 pm (2.18pm AEST) at Manassas, Virginia. She said police have not confirmed his identity.

The shooting occurred at a service station close to Interstate Highway 66, which runs into Washington, about 30 kilometres to the east.

Officials said they did not know whether the Manassas shooting was connected to the sniper attacks, but police were seeking a man driving a black Honda who may be a witness.

Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms were on the scene assisting local and state police.

"We are just now beginning the investigation," Chinn said.

Police officers in bulletproof vests closed the highway in front of the service station in both directions and blocked off a shopping centre and a patch of high ground across the street with yellow tape.

Six people have been confirmed killed and two wounded in sniper attacks over the past week that have terrorised local residents and frustrated police.

Earlier, local media reported the sniper had baited police with a message at the scene of his last shooting stating: "I am God".

The message reportedly scribbled on the 'Death card' in a Tarot pack said: "Dear policeman, I am God."

Nearby was a shell casing on grass where police suspect the killer lay in wait for a 13-year-old boy shot on Monday as he was being dropped off at school.

The sniper left the message in a wooded area about 140 metres from the school in Prince George's County, northeast of the US capital.

The boy, who remains in a critical condition in a Washington hospital, was the shooter's latest confirmed victim, sparking a massive manhunt involving hundreds of state and Washington police and federal investigators.

Charles Moose, police chief for Montgomery County in Maryland, where five of the killings took place, expressed anger at the leaking of the sniper's taunting message.

"My concern about the card is its ability or inability to mess up the investigation. My investigators made a clear and compelling arguments to me that that information was not to be released," Moose said.

"Let's hope the damage (from the leak) is minimised."

Five people were killed within a 16-hour period from late October 2 to last Thursday in Montgomery County, which borders Washington. A sixth was shot in the chest late on Thursday while standing on a Washington street corner close to the Maryland border, but survived.

On Friday, a woman was shot in the back in the parking lot of a shopping mall in Fredericksburg, Virginia, some 80 kilometres south of Washington.

The victims were both male and female, and of varying races and ages. All were felled with a single bullet.

Ballistics tests have linked six of the eight shootings. The two other bullets were in poor shape, making it difficult to link them conclusively to the other shootings, officials said.

Police believe a single gunman using a high-powered hunting or military rifle is behind the attacks.

Rewards for information leading to the capture and conviction of the killer have mushroomed to almost $US300,000 ($A550,000).

Moose said authorities had received 8,000 calls concerning the case and had classified 1,600 as credible leads.

Working on a tip from a witness, police searched woods near Clinton, Maryland, for the suspected sniper but found nothing, authorities said.

Police also arrested a man after a shooting incident at a private home in which no one had been injured. Moose did not identify the person, except to say he was known to police.

"It is certainly too early to say if this was related to our situation," Moose said.

White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said President George W. Bush has ordered the FBI "to do everything in its power to help" local investigators. He said the killings were "clearly a concern."

'I am God,' sniper taunts on death card message
By Christian Davenport and Jamie Stockwell in Washington
                October 10 2002

The sniper linked to eight Washington-area shootings has left a taunting message outside the school where a 13-year-old boy was shot on Monday morning.

"Dear policeman, I am God," it read.

Police said it was found on a tarot card - the Death card.

It was spotted in a wooded area about 150 metres from the school entrance, where police also found a spent shell casing and a matted area of grass that suggested the gunman had lain in wait.

The message was the first known communication from the sniper, police sources said.

Authorities have linked the same gun to several of the shootings, which have killed six people and wounded two.

However, despite devoting ever more resources to the investigation, authorities have reported few clues.

Police returned to several of the crime scenes on Tuesday, searching again for clues in a case that continues to baffle investigators.

The inquiry has drawn 195 investigators from local, state and federal agencies.

The investigation includes reviews of lists of snipers who served in the US military, recent sales of rifles and a systematic review of 1400 leads received from the public and considered to be credible.

Investigators are also trying to determine whether there are links between the victims and the shooter.

"This could be anything," one police source said. "It could be another Timothy McVeigh. It could be bin Laden. It could be Joe Nut."

Yesterday marked a week since the attacks are known to have begun with a single shot fired through the window of a craft store in Aspen Hill, Maryland.

Since then, six people have been killed and two wounded by eight shots from the gunman.

The victims range from a 13-year-old boy about to walk into his school in Bowie, Maryland, to a 72-year-old man crossing a street at night in the nation's capital.

The trauma of the past week was evident when Montgomery County's police chief, Charles Moose, stepped up to a microphone for an afternoon news conference and began by saying, "There are no acts of violence in the county to report."

Authorities said the rifle used in Monday's shooting at Benjamin Tasker Middle School was the same one used in five of the other shootings.

The boy shot outside the Bowie school remains in critical but stable condition in hospital.

The only other victim to survive, a 43-year-old woman shot in a Virginia shopping mall on Friday, was discharged from hospital on Tuesday after steadily improving since the weekend.

All the victims were shot from a distance with a high-powered rifle that can be deadly accurate from as far as 450 metres.

Authorities said it appeared that the victims were chosen at random as they went about the chores of everyday life - going to school, vacuuming a car, walking down the street.

This is getting fucking hilarious. Now every psycho in the USA is going to start sniping people at random with high powered rifles.

Now every time that you're standing at the gas pump filling up the car how will you know that there isn't a nutcase lining you up in his telescopic sight? Oh well, remember that "guns don't kill people, people kill people".

Sad really. This is just the inevitable consequence of a culture obsessed with guns.

It has nothing to do with a culture obsessed with guns...its has to do with people that are psychotic and don't know when is the proper time to use a gun.

Guns will never be outlawed as long as the U.S.A. values the constitution. If that sad day ever comes when they don't, revolution will be at hand.

As long as the U.S. values the constitution? Maybe you haven't heard about John Ash-cro-ft? The constitution is toilet paper to the current administration.

lol, I love people who blame this shit on the freedom to bare arms.

You think a psychopath who is hellbent on murder wouldn't find a gun through illegal means if guns were outlawed?

that right to bear arms amendment is not nationalized and any state or local law can ban it,,

The founding fathers had a very good idea with the right to bear arms. They wanted to ensure that no government would be so powerful and corrupt (like their former British masters) that they couldn't overthrow them by having the right to bear arms.

Unfortunately they didn't anticipate the scale of the military or the massive technological advances, so basically that portion of the constitution is now moot.

It's too bad, as the US really NEEDS a revolution. It's become more and more a police state every day, with corporations at the reins.

                                                              Cheers,

This sounds to me like either the CIA or some religious freak(s) -- sometimes one in the same, especially with this administration. They're leaving behind clues which say "I am God" and these shootings are happening in relatively close proximity to the Northern VA area?

Anyone who goes to www.jesus.com will find that this dude lives in that area, has a very wanted website domain name and is using it to lay out some pretty deep shit concerning religion and "waking people up" about being sheep in general (sheep blindly following religion or government or anyone). Personally, I think he's a tad odd but does make some extremely valid points. Look at his mailbag and you'll also see he gets a LOT of pretty serious hate mail.

Poor Jesus. I hope this won't affect JesusCash or any sites over at JesusHosting. With all this Visa stuff going on, there couldn't be a worse time to be without his newest program, JesusBilling, as a backup.

Would the family be able to help Jesus out if he needs it?
