its emo-ish. He does whine alot but it's not like what is known as mainstream emo now. Which is disgusting music.
SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60. Let me repeat... A 120 x 60 button and no more that 3 lines of DEFAULT SIZE AND COLOR text.
one needs only listen to "Something I Can Never Have" to realize, his emo roots which began in the bands BEFORE NIN. Trent has ALWAYS been this way, and his "depressed emotional music" whether it's made with synthesizer, drum machines, and heavy distorted guitars and computers or guitars and a 3 piece band - can and still is classified in the emo genre. His bands before NIN were emo and he brought it into NIN as well, just added more angst and marketed it "artsy" but the anger/depression/angst/pop element of emo has always been there.
I wont go into the purist theory of it, although I am a huge Ian MacKaye and Guy Picciotto fan, including owning the similar guitars as them due to their influence on me. But it's basically a music genre of rock. Indie rock, and emotional music is the simplest way to say it.
Yeah I went to the concert that NIN was Headlining in Toronto a Week ago. Watched my Favorit Band play Queens Of The Stone Age and left when NIN came on.. LOL..
Music doesn't need labels. Saying NIN is EMO music is like saying "Led Zepplin fans are all druggies" or "Pink Floyd is for people who take acid". If you want to look at things in a very two dimensional way, and attempt to put a little sticky label on things, then, yeah, well... whatever.
Question: Is Prince funk, old school, electronic, hard, rap, dance, pop, metal, or soul?
Question: Is No Doubt / GS rock, alternative, funk, dance, rap, AOR, or pop?
Sticky labels don't stick well to most moving object.
Just another in a long string of labels applied to any band/music that achieves any sort of popular success by whiny bitches like Fletch.
If you take any band Fletch currently likes (you can bet theres some unintelligible screaming involved) and made them the most popular band out there, Fletch would say he doesn't like them anymore because they sold out, and would apply a derogatory label to them
I'm becoming less defined, as days go by
Fading away, well you might say I'm losing focus
Kind of drifting into the abstract in terms of how I see myself
Sometimes, I think I can see right through myself
Sometimes, I think I can see right through myself
Sometimes, I can see right through myself
Less concerned, about fitting into the world
Your world that is, cause it doesn't really matter anymore
(No, it doesn't really matter anymore)
No, it doesn't really matter anymore
None of this sh... really matters anymore
Yes, I am alone, but then again I always was
As far back as I can tell, I think maybe it's because
Because you were never really real to begin with
I just made you up to hurt myself
I just made you up to hurt myself
Yeah, and I just made you up to hurt myself
I just made you up to hurt myself
Yeah, and I just made you up to hurt myself
And it worked
There is no you, there is only me
There is no you, there is only me
There is no fucking you, there is only me
There is no fucking you, there is only me
Well, the tiniest little dot caught my eye
And it turned out to be a scab
And I had this funny feeling
Like I just knew it's something bad
I just couldn't leave it alone
Picking at that scab
It was a doorway trying to seal itself shut
But I climbed through
Now I'm somewhere I am not supposed to be
And I can see things I know I really shouldn't see
And now I know why now, now I know why
Things aren't as pretty on the inside
There is no you, there is only me
There is no you, there is only me
There is no fucking you, there is only me
There is no fucking you, there is only me
Well no matter what stupid label you want to give them. You should at least choose one which was about during their time. "emo" didn't even exsist back when NIN started out.
Oh, and Trent is a musical genius who is widely credited to making a completely new form of music and genre in the industry (I think it was with Halo 14 ). Say what you will, but you can never take that away from NIN.

you have no clue on genre's of music, you obviously dont know where the term emo started or what band it referred to. ALL music is emotional if ya wanna get technical, but it was Rites of Spring in the 80's that started the genre people refer to as emo. NIN is lumped into industrial and more recently has become more mainstream electronic pop etc...

Emo or no, anyone who makes a song that Johnny Cash covered has got the skills.
I'd also say that songs with the lyrical phrases like "I want to feel you from the inside" and "fist fuck" in situationally appropriate ways can be forgiven any associated angst.

Agreed. I've always been a fan of NIN.
I see Trent as a cool producer that took synthesizer based music in another direction (dark). You had Kraftwerk (a German group) in the 70's that pioneered synthezer music, which inspired Afrika Bambataa to use synthz to lay down the foundation for hip-hop in the late 70's early 80's, then you had Michael Jackson use it to make pop music (Thriller), and finally Trent Reznor to make it cool for the "life suck I want to kill myself, whatever" generation of the 90's.

You are absolutely right. Industrial wasn't dark at all before NIN.
Whitehouse - Right to Kill (1983)
That's yours
That body's yours
Beat it
Fuck it
Dominate, mutilate, strangulate
Rape and bugger it
Kill it
Eat it
It's your right to kill
It's your nature
The ultimate pleasure
Kill! kill! kill!
It's your fucking right to kill
It's your fucking nature
Kill! Kill! Kill!
It's my right to kill!

hehe fine, I'm not familiar with Whitehouse. Let's just say Trent took it mainstream or is one of the more recognizable faces of industrial.

Skinny Puppy was a major direct influence on Reznor himself. Listen to some early 80s S.P. and it's virtually indistinguishable from NIN's early work... S.P. in turn were also influenced by throbbing gristle, kraftwerk and such, so it all comes back to the source in the end.
NIN is pop industrial - he brought electronic industrial music to the mainstream. yea, he whines a lot - but about the loss of god, the meaning or meaningless of life and the inability to love. Emo kids sings somewhat depressing, cheesy lyrics about the girl who doesn't like them and the music is usually upbeat and happy sounding. 2 completely different things. Nice easy generalization for the GFY audience though.
