I spent the last week designing and producing sample CD's and business cards for the show, then late this afternoon my server crashes! Right now, if you try to visit Wonders of the Unseen World, you'll get the ole "The Page Cannot Be Displayed" message.

"We'll back it up from tapes," they say, but that might mean all the changes I made in the last few days need to be reloaded, and I'll be in Vegas. Arrrggghhh!

I hope it doesn't get any worse!

OUCH!

Always..ALWAYS keep a good copy PLUS a working copy on your own systems! If you only have one terminal, it's time to buy another to network and keep the pristine site copies on. Then you can do you your own backups to their backup or just reload your entire site with all your changes intact.

Hard drives are cheap! We paid more for a 250 meg than a 40 gig costs in the old days. lol The backup system doesn't have to be a rocket either. Our server is a P2-333 and it works fine for what we use it for.

I have the good files on my own machine, and the new disk drive was installed and updated with a recent back up (several days ago). Now my problem is that the permissions got changed, so that I can't update all the files. In particular, I can't overwrite a file with one of the same name, or upload a file with a unique name and change it to an existing filename, or simply even rename a file on the server. Double arrgghh!!!

This would be bad enough any other time, but getting ready for the show, it's a pisser.

You can't delete and upload?! We'd be on the phone so fast and yell so loud they'f have a headache for a week. These d*mned hosts are getting away with murder with stupid things like this. The techs know that when they change hardware they have to reset permissions etc but do they?! Nope. That is ridiculous!

But from your original post, I thought you didn't have your own copies of the whole site/s on your own system/s. It might take abit more work and require more hardware on our part but we have 2 entire working copies of all of our as well as our clients sites locally. This terminal is normally in standalone status and always is when it's online so the server here can't get hacked and our local versions messed with. Better safe then sorry we learned back in the 90's when a host lost a site we had just built and didn't do backups themselves.
