Amplitube is the best one. It sounds like an actual guitar amp and has all the built in effects to get a great sound. It can be used stand alone or as a vst instrument.

            i've read about this..

i'm not too familiar with using the comp in conjunction with an electric guitar... where do you plug the cord leading from the guitar in typically in relation to the computer? i assume you don't just plug it directly to the soundcard hehe.

That's exactly what you do. Go to Radioshack and get a 1/4" to 1/8" stereo jack and plug right into the mic input.
I plug my acoustic/electric right in and use a program called Acoustica Mixcraft to record multi tracks.
SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, then you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60.

Agreed. As far as any computer based guitar fx or sound modelling goes this is the best product I have tried.

ok cool. i've tried that before actually and it did work.

one problem i encountered though. i forget what the software was, but when you tried applying effects to the guitar, while PLAYING LIVE, seemed like a difficult challenge, because there was a half second delay for it to process. and then on top of that, when i went to record, it wouldn't record the effect, just the standard guitar sound on clean.

ideally i'd like a program that would allow me to hear the specified effect while i play live (without any delay), and record it exactly as i hear it with the effect - along with multiple tracks.

if i had that, i'd be a happy guy.

In certain programs you can adjust the buffer size. By setting a larger buffer you can get rid of the delay. Takes a bit of tweaking to get it perfect...but it is worth the effort.

in ProToools you can use real time VST effect that are recorded as you hear them.

Guitar Port by Line6 is cheap and a lot of fun to play with. Tons of effects, plus a (pay) website where you can download patches and backing tracks. It is not pro equipment or suitable for live performance, but it is perfect for messing around with on your computer.

Just get a multi rack effects unit.

Software is still too far off to be usable. Even amplitube is useless. Too much of a delay between the time you pluck a string and sound comes out.

Amplitube is very cool. POD is nice, there are some others out there too that sound pretty kook. Ampworks by Korg is decent.
