And how much per month should a gig typically run?

shop other people and that will give you an idea what your customers are going to expect. it's crazy because most corporate web sites on shared hosting are not going to need more than 50mb of space but companies are offering 1gig 2 gig and crazy transfer numbers. they expect that no one will use that amount but it looks great for their marketing.

i tried shared hosting once and either got penny pinching owners who were on the phone every other day or scammers.
