    This Bites

As most of you know, I've been having problems with my local internet provider since Memorial Day weekend. Yesterday, the line from Pratt to Wichita went dead & I called them to ask how long will it be down this time. They had to wait before a serviceman from SW Bell came to town to work on it. Knowing that SW Bell are slow to get anywere especially since their local office was closed down about 10 years ago, I signed up with another local internet provider (funny how a year ago there were four of those fuckers & now there is only two).

First off, the second IP asked me to fill out a three-page contract (the first one had a one-pager). Then when they asked me if I used Windows '95, I told them I used Windows ME. They looked dumbfounded & I explained it was Windows Millinium Edition. They still looked like I was from Mars. Of course, being the fact that they were two older women which one was had to be past retirement age probably didn't help.

Here's the kicker: everytime I take the time to read any damn text for longer that a few minutes, I get disconnected. I made sure that the modem's "disconnect if idle for 60 seconds" was unchecked as well as the "enable idle disconnect" on dialing properties.

Just the time it took me write this, I've got booted off again. This is really annoying the hell out of me. I'm going to have to call them & bitch.

Did you check to see if those are unchecked in the actual dialup for the new ISP? And find a site online that has modem initialization strings to compare the new ISPs string to... If they have it in their string, try removing it and see if you can connest still.

      Hey Jamdin..

      That sucks buddy..

Have you tried earthlink? or AT&T dialup? Both of them never boots me off.

      I use them both now.

If you can afford a bit more ($50), there's always broadband.

      Never give up.. Never surrender.

Gemini, I checked them for the new ISP & they were both unchecked.

Stangster, I tried earthlink for one day because dialing up is out of town. For three hours work, it'll cost me $18. Figuring how much I'm online anymore, that's not an option.

          Damn, there it goes again...

Just got off the phone with the tech. Went through everything I did & even checked the login. He was stumped too. I'm about an hour's drive west of Wichita.

Netzero will have long distance numbers too.

You didn't mention if the tech guy helped? Did you get disconnected? Did he solve your problem?

He was stumped as well, but did going thru everyhing help?

We finally figured it out: lower the modem speed. Doh...

When all else fails, do that

I was just going to say to check your modem speed and lower your port speed as well. The techie stirred here finally and mumbled to me about those. Port speeds are a major culprit with some dialups.

I still think that everytime the Kansas wind blows, the internet is down

I got the port speed lowered too. Thanks, Gemini

Found out what the first ISP's problem is. Their phone circuits blew. Guess they couldn't handle the summer traffic
