Went through a couple programmers to finally find one that could at least do the project halfway decent. But then again, you get what you pay for.

I've used both scriptlance and elance and found the same to be true for both.
                  1. If they say they understand what you want - they don't
                  2. If they say they can get it done in a week - they can't
                  3. The most expensive coders can be just as bad as the cheaper ones
                  4. Use someone that lives close to you and speaks your language as a FIRST language so you can call and talk them through until they 'get it!'

I have a large project thats had 4 highly recommended programers/programing teams ... - STILL only 90% complete after a year *sigh*

I have used scriptlance 3 times: twice for coding and once to find a server techie. All good experiences.

I suspect that the service you use to find someone is less important than how you frame your requirements and then vet the people who respond.

I'm with vicki.. bad experiences.. went through 6-7 during the fall for a small project and no way I'm doing it again.. there are SO many eastern europeans and asians that don't have a clue there... after that I went for a local company and they had it wrapped up pretty quick even though it cost me 10 x more.. got 100 x better support and quality though...

Maybe I was just lucky, but on the other hand I have hired hundreds of people over the years in the bricks-and-mortar world and a very high percentage who apply for jobs are wasting your time. If you recruit with any degree of success, after a while you develop an instinctive BS meter as well as practical ways of sifting through applicants.

I outsourced a few of projects to them.

First one was a mod of smarterscripts.com script, which went well, the second was a custom script.

The first went really well, cheap and fast
                            the second never got done.

they are really good at moding smarterscripts.com because smarterscripts feeds them a lot of that mod traffic (i assume)
so the guys have gotten good at performing that task.

Scriptlance hoses you for paying your programmrs...

also, your gonna get lots of bots bidding on your project

I eventually got a guy to do the work, all though he was foreign.

I'll likely NOT be posting a job on there again.

I use rentacoder.com - smaller but more technical audience reading your bid requests I think. Be VERY specific in what you are asking for in your bid request, and immediately disregard the form letter "We very good program. You project no problem our staff start program today." emails that you will get.

Make sure you require the coder to comment every function (in english).

Typically, I get the core stuff written on rentacoder for dirt cheap, then have one of my guys (much more expensive, but much better coders) polish it off. Ends up saving me a ton of money and it gets finished in 1/2 the time.

                                  Hope this helps.

speaking as both a coder and a guy who has outsourced work -
the key to success is figuring out how to manage the outsourcer... communicate the job effectively, track their progress, give feedback and direction, etc. Its NOT easy.

I am 2 out of 5 from there. Two went well and three was a waste of time but got my money back.

I think it's hit or miss, they will bid on the job even if they can't do it and try to wind it.

One thing is that there is allot of pre-made scripts on there so asking for a script already made with your requirements is a good way start.

Used http://www.rentacoder.com twice. First time I got some Romanian kid for a programmer...he kept on coming up with excuses. Exams this, exams that. He delivered about 7 different versions of the final work non of which met my standards. We settled and I only ended up paying half and tossing the script.

Second time around I went with one of the highest bidders instead of the lowest. Much better results.

i must have got lucky. its like ebay though, read the feedback. i posted a custom vb program i needed and had 10 bids within a few hours, picked the best guy (he asked me a ton of questions before he even bid, which was good). paid like $75 and the guy had it done the next day. now i just use him when i need something.

that place is shit, don't use them... very bad experience with them.

everyone said they could do this and they could do that, but they can't do jack shit.

usually they require you to make a deposit upon starting the project, you'll lose that money and won't see anything done.

You could buy adultsitelance.com and resurrect it

I've used Scriptlance, found an awesome coder in Russia who has done many projects for me. I've had some designers do awesome work, and some absolutely suck. I try to get English-speaking folks, otherwise you're in for a rude awakening.

It's decent, you run into a few fucktards who don't speak proper English now and then but they have an escrow system so if they don't deliver they can go fuck themselves.
