    Plasma vs. LCD

I'm getting too many conflicting reports about these two technologies.

So, I'm asking for public opinion now.

    Who's your favourite manufacturer?

And, do you own or would you own a Plasma TV or an LCD.

We're in the market for one.

I heard Plasma now has a longer life... Just cannot pause an image on the screen otherwise it can burn it and stay permanent.

As for LCD, I heard most manufactures have a deal pixel policy, where as they do not fix or replace unless for eg. there are 7 dead pixels...

Also, with plasma, I can get a bigger television ...at least that's what I'm reading..and I'm hearing that the burn - in problem with plasma has been somewhat resolved....

The only thing I hate about LCDs is that unless you're at a perfect viewing angle, the image goes dark... and if there is any sunlight shining on it, it becomes unwatchable.

LCD is great and you can get a good extended warranty deal at BestBuy and most stores. Plasma is young too and are sensetive to burn and altitudes and I dont know what else. If you ask the pro's they'll tell you that its a pick'em situation and your choice depends on your personal preferences and what your least willing to compromise, since each has their pros and cons. If you go with LCD, everyone knows that Sharp makes the best LCDs by far. Ive got the 26" for my bedroom and the 37" for my living room and theyre both really fucking cool IMHO. Hope that helps a little.

I use 6+ LCD monitors (15" w/TV tuner built-in) and no problems whatsoever for nearly 3 years. the model below may be hard to find but check for other brands with similar/better specs/sizes.
                          http://www.corneasystems.com/ct1503t.php

if you're going for sheer size/value, Plasma is better bet, but not as great when used as a PC monitor. I also have 2 plasmas (42") and was using them for my PCs but have gone back to the multi-mon LCD setup and only use the plasmas for entertainment. Plasmas have too much potential for screen burn-in (1 of mine already has a windows 98 partial burn-in ) and viewing the web widescreen just got on my nerves after awhile... especially while designing sites/graphics, etc.

and remember if you're getting LCDs, try to get them with TV tuners built in. worth the extra cost.

                          good luck.

plasma if you go over 82 cm (thats 42 inches i think)

pioneer and sony are the best, dont bother buying philips or another brand: the pixels burn out quit quick in those cheaper brands

                                      Plasma.

                                      Contrast.

Advantage: Plasma. For scenes with a lot of dark and light images shown simultaneously-as with content originating from DVDs, video games, and NTSC TV signals-plasma TVs will consistently outperform LCD TVs.

                                      COLOR SATURATION

Advantage: Plasma, with the following caveat: While plasma displays are especially good for moving images, LCD technology is better at displaying static images with particular crispness and even coloration.

                                      VIEWING ANGLE Advantage: Plasma

Plasma manufacturers have made much of their 160° viewing angles, which is about as good as horizontal and vertical viewing angles get. This owes to the fact that each pixel is lit by itself, not from some central light source. Hence, each pixel is more readily visible because its brightness is consistent with every other pixel on the screen.

                                      VIDEO PLAYBACK Advantage: Plasma

                                      PRODUCTION SIZE & COST Advantage:

Advantage: Plasma. Even though production costs and retails prices have come down for both technologies, plasma still has the edge as far as production cost and capacity go.

                                      LCD.

                                      FUNCTIONAL CONSIDERATIONS "Computer use"

Advantage: LCD, except at "harsh" viewing angles

                                      LONGEVITY Advantage LCD X2

                                      SCREEN INTEGRITY Advantage: LCD

                                      VOLTAGE REQUIREMENTS Advantage LCD X2

Now you make the final decision ;)

Hi Raven, long time no see!

The LCD's always look better than plasma to me, the ones I've seen have better color and image quality than plasma, and although they are more expensive the prices have been dropping quite a bit lately. Microcenter has some 32" LCD TV's for under a grand now, I think it was about $5000 a year ago for the same size (different brand).

I'd check out the power consumption on each as well, I think LCD is very low compared to a CRT, but unless I'm mistaken plasma is much higher.

I have a 42 inch plasma - Panasonic. I went thru the same thing. I could not decide between LCD, DLP and Plasma. Plasma is the way to go, hands down. Look at Panasonic and Sony. The latest 8th generation plasma made by Panasonic, which I thought had a better picture than the Sony, is half the price of the Sony. I love watching HDTV on it.

                                                arent you talking about plasma?

btw LCD for sure, better image quality, and more reliable at all.

Plasma are great from any angle, and the blacks are better not Grey like on a LCD>

LCD's do have a problem with light and angles, so you need to think about that depending on your location.

DLP, I have owned all of the above, DLP is the way to go.

Samsung makes a great one that "looks" like a plasma.

If you really want to see a difference you have to view them side by side, once you see a plasma next to a LCD you will know what to do
