It took 22 hours to defrag a 40 gig hd. Can anyone supply a reason why it would take that long?

I am just gonna take a wild shot in the dark at this one .. but I would bet dollars to donuts that you had a process (or processes) running in the background that were writing info to your HD ... if ANYTHING is being written to the hard drive while defragging, the defragger starts at the beginning .... some defrag software (including Microshit) will give up if it restarts 10 times ...
I suggest O & O Software's defrag tool ... it is far better than any other defrag tool I have tried ... and ZD and Download.com both give it 5 STARS !!!
First time you run it ... do a full SORT BY ACCESS defrag ... might take you several hours, so do it when you are going to bed ... and then from there on in run it maybe every second week, in STEALTH MODE, which will do a full defrag in the background while you have other processes running ...

I shut down everything except windows explorer using alt/delete and even unplugged my cable modem. I did not notice any restarts until about the 18th hour. It may have began restarting prior to that and I just didn't catch it. Around the the 18th hour when I did catch it restarting, it would defrag for approximately five minutes then it would take about four minutes for it to be back at the point where it had restarted and defrag for another five minutes then restart again etc.Originally posted by -=HUNGRYMAN=-

Next time I defrag I will use system config to kill everything in the startup list, then use alt/delete to kill the rest, and unplug the cable modem.
