Do you think it would be worth it to create and develop your own website that is similiar to myspace yet unique to your own preferences? Just curious if people would take the time to do it given the chance. Discuss

like WG said, there are LOADS of sites like that on the internet now. i would think it would be like starting a TGP to try to compete with thehun. they have such a huge customer base, and alot of these people are devoted, and some great word of mouth advertising. i just don't think it would be very worthwhile.Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war.Comment

In the U.S. Attorney's case, authorities allege that, starting in October 2004, Greco fraudulently created thousands of accounts at MySpace, an online community in which members can write Web logs, share pictures and send instant messages. Greco sent spim messages from the accounts, according to the U.S. Attorney's statement.
The young man allegedly contacted MySpace.com and demanded that he be given exclusive rights to send commercial e-mail to MySpace.com users. When MySpace.com did not respond, he threatened to share his technique for sending spim messages to MySpace.com users with the spamming community and "open a Pandora's box of Spam" on MySpace's network, the statement said.

Prosecutors are charging Greco with threatening to cause damage to MySpace.com's computers and with intent to extort, in addition to the CAN-SPAM Act violations. He faces a maximum penalty of 18 years in federal prison if convicted on all three offenses, the U.S. Attorney's statement said.

Nope.Originally posted by chadglniI really hope he got rich when he did that. That place was gold.
He actually wrote the program and contacted them to see if he could get the rights to use it and inturn he'd pay them daily and help combat spam from other people. As far as I know, he didn't actually do the spamming. They got him on that and extortion because he said he'd make the code available to anyone if they weren't interested in his offer.
I don't know the complete outcome. He's gotta stay quiet until sentencing.Comment

I know there are plenty of alternatives out there, and there will probably continue to be many alternatives out there, but from this standpoint I don't see myspace going anywhere fast now. I mean, their company is in the stocks and they are trading very nicely... but I just don't see the popularity growing much higher... that's why I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed this pattern with these type of sites... almost like a fad for teenagers...Yii Framework Guru - Seasoned PHP vet - Partner @ XXXCoupon.comComment

The bullshit about that story is that it says "When MySpace didn't respond..."
They responded right off and were hip to putting this all together. Now in hindsight, it's pretty obvious what they were up to.
What's funny is that they got him on this and then a few weeks later they were sued by NYS Attorney General for installing Spyware on 3,000,000 New Yorkers computers. They settled and admit no wrong doing.Comment

Playing with myspace these days is playing with fire. They are very active in sending C&D's to you, your host, and your sponsor threatening legal action if not acted upon immediately. Yes people still spam them, but I would not advise it to my worst enemy.Originally posted by johnuglo

Yahoo 360 sucks, msn version sucks, and if only half a % of your members are posting a profile then you are doing something wrong. I'm not going to say anything further on the subject except I can't believe so many people can get something so simple so wrong.Originally posted by johnugloyahoo has 360, msn has a version in the works.

What happened was that someone else was spamming their system and the just assumed that it was him when he came to them with his proposal.Originally posted by chadglniNot saying I don't believe you but the one I read said 1.3 million messages offering mortgage leads and something else I believe. 1.3 million messages to myspace is like 1996 adult market. But yeah...they were claiming that 1.3 million emails in their system cost them over $20k to purge from their system. We all know that's bullshit.
Some mailers are sending out a few million per hour.
In my eyes, they set this kid up. I've read the email conversations. They baited him and he fell for it. They duped him in to flying out to LA for a business meeting. He was a 19 year old kid that thought he had landed a nice business deal. He wasn't out to extort anyone, but they most definitely did twist his words up to make it seem that way.Comment

He took their plea and was convicted. Sentencing in September. I'm sure he knows what he's in for, considering he took the plea agreement...but can't say anything until September.Originally posted by chadglniThat's pretty gay. Hope he gets off lightly.
I hope it's not that much either. He's a great kid, super smart with lots of potential. He just needs a little guidance...he's still young.Comment

MIXTURE - Are you in the mix?
An online company I once worked for back in 98/99. Back then we had what's now popular with Friendster and MySpace. Mixture is back however... take a look at www.mixture.com or message me for an invite if you're interested.
