    Do ionic air purifiers work?

"Uses Ionic technology to clean the air without filters."

    WTF?

Run a search on them. There was some discussion here about many of them emitting dangerous ozone into the home.

      No.

"Buying an air cleaner that doesn't clean the air is bad enough. Some of the least effective ionizer models also can expose you to potentially harmful ozone levels, especially if you're among the roughly 80 percent of buyers with asthma or allergy concerns."

I would not trust the oogy booby myths and stories about them.
They do work fairly well, and it has been common practice since the very early 80's to use ion generators in burn centers. Not only does it clean the air and help keep a clean room clean, it also encourages healing.

well i don't see why sharper image would just settle with consumer reports if their product did really work...

Sharper Image pays $525,000 to end lawsuit against CU

Sharper Image Corp. has ended a product-disparagement lawsuit that it brought against Consumers Union, publisher of Consumer Reports, paying CU court-ordered attorneys? fees and costs totaling $525,000.

Sharper Image sued after Consumer Reports judged the company?s Ionic Breeze Quadra air cleaner ?ineffective? in an October 2003 report. A U.S. District Court dismissed the suit, ruling that Sharper Image had not shown our findings to be false. Because Sharper Image?s claims affected CR?s rights of free speech and press, the court ordered the company to pay our legal expenses. Sharper Image filed an appeal but later withdrew it, ending the legal action.

?Sharper Image?s decision to withdraw its appeal puts an end to a lawsuit that should never have been filed, over reviews that were truthful, carefully researched, and fairly stated,? said Jim Guest, president of Consumers Union. ?This is a victory for every American concerned about the rights of an unbiased organization to test products independently, and to speak out in the interest of product performance and quality.?

If you smoke get an ionic air purifier, otherwise get a HEPA air purifier.

I have two high end models from Sharper Image. They have broke down 3 times but each time Sharper Image replaces them with a new model, for free, no questions asked.

I have a HEPA filter myself.. Ionic sounds like a gimmick to me.

Someone gave me a desktop (small) ionizer back in the late 70's. It impressed me enough to get a room-sized one for home and I have used them ever since. Definitely a good idea for smokers (freshens the air too) and you only need to clean one to see just how much dirt they pull out of the air. Keeping them clean is a must if you want them to work well.

But BTW, Sharper Image way overprice theirs. Look around the 'Net and you really needn't pay much more than half of SI's prices.

I have two Sharp Plasmaclusters... choose them instead of the Sharper Image models cause they gave off ozone.
