photoshop, but you need to use it correctly not to lose quality, probably pick up a book on image editing and read up on that...

Can anyone recommend something *cheap* for resizing images? MS Paint just isn't cutting it anymore, and photoshop is too expensive for my use.

photoshop elements is pretty good. You may want to consider buying a new camera, very often you will get a copy of PS elements or some other decent software included with the purchase...

                              ok here: www.whoic.com/delete/1.jpg

see how HUGE it is? I have about 700 more just from today!

first id like to do a mass resize without dumping too much quality of photo

then id like to go through a few photo's such as this one, and crop/frame. For example, in this image id like to center the bottom car and crop everything else out.

                              thanks!

Myself, I use Adobe PS for most everything. The batching feature kicks ass.

For those of you in need of an excellent FREE image editing program that also does batches check out:
                                Irfanview

oh yes ofcourse! that looks wonderful.

ok thing is i know how to do that in PS, My most immediate problem is that i have 700+ images that are just rediculously large.

If i do a mass resize to all of them i need to make sure that the quality is left intact so that im able to zoom in and crop such as you did, without it being grainy do to the resize.

                                          makes sense?

just found this, and gonna go try now.

I use Web Photo Gallery in PS6. It's listed under File, Automate. You put all the images in one folder (and nothing else), select that folder as source, choose a destination folder (any) and tell it the resize dimensions and jpeg compression. Once you get it all ready, hit OK, sit back and watch... it's really cool to se it go through all the steps. When it finishes, you will see it as a webpage with thumbnails, but ignore this, close the browser, and then go to the destination folder and look for a subfolder named "Images". All your resized jpegs will be there, plus it makes another subfolder with thumbnails. Some HTML pages are included... I just delete those.

You will have to do all the croppying before the resizing! Otherwise you will lose alot of quality!

For example if i were to crop the picture i did above, i would only get:

And if i wanted to resize that to make it bigger - it would look crappy:

                                                        My Photoshop 7 instructions...

Have a folder with all the pictures you want to resize. Inside this folder create another folder - name it "resized".

                                                        Open a picture.

Go to Window in the tool bar, make sure Actions is check marked.

In the actions window click - Create new action - name it "cars" - record.

Go to Image in the tool bar - Image Size - Pixel Dimensions - Width: 35 percent - make sure constrain proportions & resample image are checked. Height % will be done automatically by photoshop. Click OK.

Click file save as - name it something different - Quality 12 - delete it later.

In the actions window click - Stop playing/recording.

                                                        File / Automate / Batch
                                                        Action: cars
                                                        Source: Folder
Choose: Directory with all your big pictures
                                                        Destination: Folder
Choose: the "resized" folder i had you create before.
Check mark: override action save as commands

Click OK and watch the magic!

Photoshop ain't that expensive and it works pretty well. You just have to be skillful in using it...I'm not really good with it but I find it very effective...
