Damn. Cannot believe I missed this post earlier :-(( Thanks Jay - appreciate that. If all else fails I will be more than happy to take care of it for you.
Ahhh, its all making sense now, I guess you must be pulling in a percentage for every copy of Carma!!
LOL, I wish. I don't make anything from them, I've just worked with them getting sites going for Netpond, JaYMaN cash, and a few other guys - so they have gotten to know me
Without going into details it was just a frustrating experience. Some people seem to be satisfied with them, so maybe mine was a unique situation. I did request a refund after a month and received it. I gave the Xtract folks the same job and it was setup and customized within a week or two and I'm very happy with them.
MAS and Carma are likely the best options. However, if you want full-featured CMS for $500 which supports unlimited sites out of the box, gives you full source access and offers solid support, I believe Xtract (http://www.ecoders.biz) is your best bet.
SiteDepth looks to be very nice as well, but I did not contact them because of lack-of-support complaints. Note - to get the source for SD you have to pay $4000.

Correct. I've done a LOT of work on SD systems. Their system is good. I think that if they took on a new staff member, they'd be a very good contender in the $500 market.

Who is the leading contender in the $500 market then? I figured it was already SiteDepth. That would make sense since it might be difficult for a small staff to support a large # of installs.

CARMA uses SMARTY is its templating system - for anyone who knows about it, that's really enough said. You can do ANYTHING with your templates.
Also forgot to mention that Xtract uses the SMARTY engine as well
