    Need help with server config

Ive ran my own servers since 98 or so and have always used a dns forwarding thing to make my domains work with my dedicated server.

I'm trying to figure out how to get nameservers to resolve so I use my own dns.

I have pointed ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com to the ip's of my server.
I have pointed a domain to those nameservers.

Now how do I get it to work?

      dns

well you have to register the ip's for your name servers.

Go to the registrar of the domain you are using for ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com and there will be some feature where you can add these name servers to the global database. Simply have to add the ip's
you have chosen and hostnames and hit submit.

I'm looking around and I think I already did that

I am trying to lookup the A record and I get things like this

Searching for domain2.com A record at ns2.domain1.com. [myserver'sip]: Timed out. Trying again.
Searching for domain2.com A record at ns1.domain1.com. [myserver'sip]: Timed out. Trying again.

So I think I need to setup something on my server so it will reply correctly?

dont work on windows but sounds like you have a IN A where you require a CNAME in your zone conf files

I'm running my own name servers for a long time, always used BIND though. Setting up a name server is really pretty easy. Do as Doc911 suggested and buy a book on the name server you're using. I have the book DNS and Bind from O'reilly and that was a reaaaaaaaaaaaal big help.

O and another note, make sure your firewall is not blocking the replies from the name server.

DNS is easy, buts its not hard to overlook all the little steps.

A good tool to use is www.dnsreport.com which can often quickly point out the error.
