Help me with a notebook

I'm looking to buy a notebook any time soon and I want to pay roughly $2000-2500 for it. Which ones do you guys own ?

YOu can get a great one at Office Max for 99 cents and it has these neat buttons that you press to pop open the 3 rings!

Equinox...this is the one we just bought. Tev loves it, so far.
The first one we had was a brand new Sony Vaio, with a 16 inch screen...It was heavy and bulky and we returned it less than a week after purchase. I'm not sure what your requirements are, but the sales people were very helpful and the service was excellent.

Raven, I heard about the new Sony 16" screen notebooks, way too big and bulky. I am not really looking into something too portable, since it will be mostly used in the office. I have even been looking into the so-called sub-desktops, but then again I could just keep my desktop.

Oh and was that an IBM you ordered ? A31 looks like an IBM product to me.

Basically I am looking for a P4 CPU, probably just 1.6 GHZ, either 256 or 512 MB RAM, a 30 or 40 GB harddrive and a 15 inch screen. I kinda like the IBM notebooks, I like the way they're built. I also heard good things about the new Dell UltraScreens, anyone ?

I bought Sony Vaio last summer and very happy with it. All in one I need for this business: IE1394 (video camcorder interface), PCMCIA for IBM microdrive (my digital still camera interface), CD-RW, 256 RAM, Ethernet, real 15" (office standard) LCD, 20 Gb harddrive (I can capture about 45 min of uncompressed video) + a lot of audio/video software products (Sony original, Adobe, etc.)were included. I recommend SONY for adult Internet business

Yes. IBM Thinkpad.

We had looked at the Dell's. They cost more, for one thing, which wasn't the issue.

When I would call Dell, their customer service did not inspire me with confidence.

With IBM online, I was on the phone with my own personal rep within minutes. He was very helpful, as I've not bought a laptop before and did not encourage me to spend more than necessary, considering how we want to utilise it. We will also be purchasing a port replicator, so we can dock it when we're not on the road.

That Sony we bought had a bugging error on boot up, which, by itself, doesn't mean anything. Then, we hooked up a regular keyboard and it errored out when we took it off. It wouldn't recognise its own keyboard. Even with their restore software, it didn't run right for us. That always makes me nervous when I'm spending 2600. for a laptop.

The IBM has worked like the workhorse it is, right out of the box. All installs have gone in smoothly and the hardware hums. I can't ask for anything more than that, other than customer service. I've called them since delivery and my personal rep has been there for me, to answer all my laptop newbie questions. :-)

I was actually thinking about an Apple Powerbook as well. Seems to be incredibly powerful. But since I come from a Winblows environment (partially Linux as well), I think I might have a hard time adjusting... and most importantly getting all the programs I need....

OK, so I have no experience of Dells, IBM's etc...
But I have been so HaPPy with VAIOS. I hav had no need 2 differ,
clean, tidy, housetrained, shoes put away in the bedroom...
Had 1 once, wore out with use (Bless... RIP lil Viao)
Currently have 2 both from USA, a PCG GR370 (main)
And an PCG FX370 (4 Backup)
I luve them and want to bear their children

Hey punk, you should check out the laptop that I'd recommended.

I have one and it's awesome... good spec for a laptop too:

512MB DDR
15.1" TFT
CD-RW/DVD
40GB HDD

It is $2600 bought direct, I bought mine for $2200, which isn't bad. Stable, fast, good build quality... so definately a good investment. It IS heavy, but also strong.

I need a notbook for presentations.... around the $1000 mark as it's just for "show and tell" client situations... hard to find factory sealed 1GHZ machines though.
