    Yes. You can.

It's like running a docking station in reverse.

You can just install a program like VNC (freeware) on your desktop and laptop and then connect using tcp/ip. You'll see the screen of the desktop appear on your laptop.

There might be simpler methods (using a serial cable and some software may be), but I'm not familiar with that. I use VNC myself all the time. I have it installed on all computers that belong to my family members, so that when one of them has a problem, I don't have to go over there to help them, but can do it from behind my own pc (yes, I'm the one in the family with the computer knowledge, the rest just uses them to surf and print letters ). Works great!

I have never seen this done.

Why not buy a tv out card for your pc, then you can just use your tv as a monitor.

                      Yeah, there is a lag.

What you're looking for is using your laptop as a console on the serial port of your desktop. I'm sure this can be done. Which OS are we talking about?

I'm starting to really doubt what I have said before. I have a lot of FreeBSD servers myself, all set-up with a serial console (which means you can access them when they're not available by ssh).

From this article from MS I get the feeling Win XP is not really capable of headless (without standard monitor) 'out-of-the-band-management' (as they call management without a functioning network) with a console.

May be you should read the whole article. It is what your looking for and if there's no solution in this article for your situation, I'm pretty sure it isn't a standard Win XP feature. This DOESN'T mean it's impossible.
