I'm trying to ping my laptop from a remote server...When I have my laptop plugged directly into the cable modem it pings fine. However, when I hook my linksys wireless router up and connect my laptop through the router, it will not ping the laptop. I NEED it to ping the laptop while it's hooked up to the router. How would I go about doing this? Is there a firewall on the router that can be disabled, or what?

yeah, u have to forward the port on your router to your internal (192.168.x.x or something ) network ip address from your laptop
u can do this in the setting menu of your router

how do I do this and what exactly will it do? Heres the deal..Basically what I'm needing to do is run a program on the laptop..and the remote server needs to get the info out of the program running on the laptop. I already have the programs set up, it just can't get the info from the laptop. I just checked my Netgear router and you can't forward icmp requests to a computer on the inside. The only thing you could do was to enable/disable ping replies.
So if you have a Netgear router, you're shit outta luck. You have to come up with a different solution like checking if port 139 is up/open and forward that request to your laptop.Comment

Yeah icmp on a local network isnt very possible. Just try port forwarding as said above. Should be an option right in your router control panel.Comment
