    DHCP Chaining?

now I know I should know the answer to this since I was a network tech at one point..... and my gut tells me "no" right up front...

but lemme ask anyway..... (in the interest of saving time actually trying to do it)

is it possible to chain routers on multiple dhcp settings? Meaning, base flow is set to dhcp, can I chain a bunch of routers also set on dchp or do I absolutely need a static base?

Straight out, I would say no.... at least one static IP would be required, then a dhcp chain could be built, but is there any kind of a workaround for this that anyone knows?

what if I do it in the reverse from normal? Instead of static coming in and routers on dchp, can I maintain dchp coming in and assign generic localized static to the branches that'll interpret the outside pipe? Cuz those are internal ip's anyway, right? This shit is not gonna work is it.....

fuck... I need to get inside my routers and look at this shit again.... it's been too long. I'm feeling rather stupid.

My computer is on a dynamic (DHCP) IP through ADSL.

My computer shares a static (local) IP with my router (AirPort base station) using gNAT.

My router shares dynamic (DHCP) IPs with the laptops on our wireless network.

              Does that answer your question?

so, you got pipe to system, split with router, using router dhcp to feed the rest of the systems?

I wanna go pipe (dhcp) to router (also dhcp) to all systems....... if that can't be done, (really can't possibly be done) I will force a static to router and dhcp to all systems...

I think it can be done. To be honest, I'm not sure that the step I listed as static really is...

hehehhe...... I'm gonna bet that it's not....

I've set up thousands of these, but I never really tried to do a double dhcp chain.... so it got me curious......

a regular linksys or dlink router can pull an ip using dhcp from the WAN, while assigning local ip's via dhcp on the LAN.

As long as you arent trying to send back out on static you can do it. Personally I'd get the same SMC wireless/router combo that I bought.

                              BUT
if you want to broadcast a wireless signal further than 300 feet then you need the antenna which doesnt work with only the wireless router, but also needs the access point -- just in case you want to take the computer to the pool or the beach.

no... don't really need wireless just yet at this point... just need to hard link all the systems together but this shitty ass cable connection I got here requires (prefers) their customers to use dhcp, so if possible, I'd like to make them happy and continue that config.... but if I can't link in my routers and other systems on a doubled up dhcp path, then I will forceably extract an IP from their network and do it the ghetto way....

not sending back out on static anymore.... that shit is done with.... so.... okay.. I'll give it a shot, hook it up, and try it out.... I'm still not fully convinced that it's possible, but I'll try......
