Strongbox... wow!

We've had Pennywize installed on all our domains for some time, but just lately their seemed to be a lot of usernames getting in without Pennywize stopping them despite lowering the settings.
We decided to give Strongbox a try and have been blown away by it.
Ray who installed it for us on all our paysites is a great great guy and i cannot reccomend his software highly enough.

If you go into Pennywize, look at accounts with 2-6 logins, many have different countries, all of them are password leaks that pennywize doesn't see. Proxypass does the same thing.


When I changed over to StrongBox and my BW in the member areas droped by at least 30%, server load from pennywize / proxypass went back to normal. The amount of password leaks I had before strongbox blew me away.


Pennywize = super bad, at least get ProxyPass.

TheDoc told me in vegas to get Strongbox so I did.

I don't have anything else to compare it to but no problems so far.
I was blown away by the very low price of it.

I think with pennywize you have to pay a monthly fee?

I was right....Pennywize starts at $30 a month and can be as much as $170 a month (depending on the size of your member base)

I paid a $90 flat fee for strongbox....plus most people say its better.

about a year on something called PicFortress I had to shelve that
project due to compatibility issues. I went back and picked up some research
I'd done on password sites and dictionary attacks and 18 months later had
the first release of Strongbox ready. After PicFortress didn't pan out
it's great to know that my more recent work is working so well for so
many webmasters.

You're at Webair, right? I just set up the current version on a Webair cluster consisting
of I believe 9 (or was it 6?) front end web servers, a pair of NFS servers, and I think
another auxilary server for MySQL etc. That's working nicely, so the current version
will scale OK on a large cluster of the type Webair builds (which are done right, BTW, if anyone
is in need of a clustering solution). I believe it's OneHungLo, who posted in this thread,
who has a geographically diverse cluster running Strongbox and who seems to be
very happy with it. He has servers in different cities clustered, so we can work with
just about anything. On the other hand, very large sites of the type that are normally
put on large clusters do have some differences from smaller sites and that's why
we're writing some new Strongbox components such as an incredibly fast database
system custom designed for storing and processing the data that Strongbox uses.
Overthe next 30-60 days we'll be readying a version of Strongbox that runs like
nothing else on very large sites.

Tried strongbox but I removed it after one day because it stopped my customers from using download managers. Apparently it could have been enabled, but at a greater security risk due to the way it uses sub domains.

This is the Strongbox webmaster notification system on xxxxxxxxxxxx.com
Someone tried to login as "xxxxxxxxxxxxx",
but that same username has already been used recently
by someone in other countries. That username may be on a
password site or otherwise compromised. I'm suspending that
username for a while, to see if this behavior stops soon.
If they keep it up, I'll disable that username permanently
and email you to let you know.

Never used Strongbox, but couldn't be happier with Phantom Frog. The Frog not only blocks password abuse after the FIRST sign of abuse, it allows the real user to retrieve a new password without waiting on the webmaster to reply to an email. Basically, it's 24 hour customer service and password protection.

Guess that 24/hour support is worth $50/month. Depending on how ya look at it, I'm sure for some ppl like yourself, it's a good deal. Emailing customers and dealing with the abuse issues does take time.

In it's default configuration, most download managers will work fine
with Strongbox most of the time. There is a setting that can be
set so that most any download manager will work. It's a little more
secure to have the setting at it's default, though, which requires them
to browse the site with the same browser that they logged in with.

Yes, your feeds will work fine. For some feeds on some sites, it is necesary to change
the link to the feed slightly if the feed provider a) uses very poor referer based security and
b) doesn't allow for you to link from different subdomains.

Does Strongbox's apache module have support for transparent pass through with the new Apache 2.2 series authn_dbd modules, or would it need to use a hacked up mod_auth_mysql? (I'm not interested in a collection of Perl scripts, nor am I interested in supporting them. )

Strongbox replaces mod_auth_mysql and other authentication modules.

Strongbox is not itself a DRM system, but it does work fine with popular DRM services/systems, such as EZDRM.com What Strongbox does is prevent many people from using the same password, and prevents people from guessing passwords. Only after passwords have been secured by Strongbox does it make sense to require the passwords to play the videos. Does that make sense?
