If we need to increase troop levels, then an act of congress will increase the allotment for recruitment. VOLUNTEER recruitment. All this talk of a draft is just scare-mongering. As much as I love Michael, I am guessing the military wouldn't accept him right now.
They are turning down enlistees like crazy. Every branch has met their recruitment goals as well as the guard the reserves. They are taking the young cream of the crop guys and girls.
All they need to do is get more money from Congress, open up enlistment rolls and I can promise you there will be NO reason for a draft.Comment

I do know for a fact that my son was in DEP for almost a year and they stopped ALL recruiting into the AF back in the summer. They've started again now that their fiscal year has started, but they are required to get rid of 20K current enlistees. It used to be if you failed a class in tech school you got retrained - now you're out.Comment

The reason that we have stop loss in place is that the military learned from Vietnam. It is a BIG mistake to rotate back experienced troops and put new ones in a unit during continueing combat operations. You lose unit cohesion and the new inserted troops do not fit in, are resented, and even shunned. Things just break down on the platoon and squad level.Originally posted by burntout21

Its a trick. Conscription is illegal (13th amendment). You're simply required to show up. They cannot legally force or order you to take the oath of service. The "draft" is simply a legal way to trick people into thinking they are obligated to take the oath of military service, when in fact, they are not.
