    Optimizing Images

    Im using photoshop to make thumbs. Using gallerysubmitter.com you need something like ~4000bytes for an 88x88 thumb. How can I get to ~4000bytes for a thumb and still have good quality? For the lowest quality jpeg, which is pixelated, I can only get to ~5000 bytes.

    soudns to me like your reducing full shots that maybe were taken @ 300 or 180dpi and just reducing them, cut the resolution down to 72 or lower, 88x88 should be able to get under 4k w/ no problem..

      hey, what are you using to crop & save your thumbs with?
      SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60. Let me repeat... A 120 x 60 button and no more that 3 lines of DEFAULT SIZE AND COLOR text.

        I get most of mine into the 2.5 range easy. Make sure that you are using 72 dpi.

          still having difficulties. This is what I do:
          - copy image used in gallery
          - paste in new 72dpi
          - crop an 88 x 88 image
          - save as jpeg

          This is what I do and still am above the 3600 or so bytes required, and thats with a crummy quality image.

            don't just copy the original.... reduce the quality of it, then copy it.

              How do you recommend I reduce the quality of the original exactly?

                Resize your image to 1024x768 or smaller as well reduce the dpi to 72. (alt-i, i)

                Make your thumb.

                Save-for-web. (ctrl+alt+shift-s) - under the heading OPTIMIZED and to the right of QUALITY, drop the number down until the output is what you want.

                You should see the file size drop considerably.

                If you create a batch/action the rest of your images will be of similar file size.

                                  not in 15 seconds....in photoshop you have to create actions, etc. etc. etc...this you can literally do it all in 15 seconds and have the program closed...photoshoip can take half that long to open sometimes

                                      save actions, run it on folders? haven't found much that competes w/ pshop, on anything, especially when considering the additional filters and opt. settings to use, the range is huge, i have over 100 saved, so i can chck out a photo set, check out all the custom actions, run it on the folder, and boom, reduced, thumbed, watermarked, saved, and I didn't even open anything *shrug* but always down for new products i gotta roll peace out homies

                                              RECORDING AN ACTION:

                                              1). Start Photoshop (PS).
                                              2). Create 2 folders, at the root of any drive, and name them. I used "TODO" and "DONE."
                                              3). Place images, which you need resized, into the TODO folder.
                                              4). On the ACTIONS panel; click CREATE NEW SET (looks like folder.) and name it whatever. I used "RESIZE."
                                              5). Next, click NEW ACTION (look like layer or page.) and name it whatever. I use the size "80x80," then place it in the proper SET. So it should be in the "RESIZE" set that you just created in step #4. Then click "RECORD."
                                              NOTE: You may pick a function key (F2-12) but I do not bother.
                                              6). Click the STOP button. The square on the ACTION panel.
                                              7). Drag one of the images from the TODO folder into PS. You have to bring the photo in from the TODO folder.
                                              8). Click RECORD (round dot or circle.) on the action panel.
                                              9). Perform ALL the actions you require.
                                              As an example:
                                              a: ALT+I, I (I enter my specific size of 80 & 80.)
                                              b: CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+W (save for web.) and make sure you save to the DONE folder or this will not work.
                                              10). Close original image. I always keep the originals so I never save changes.
                                              11). Click the STOP button (square.) on the action panel.

                                              USING A RECORDED ACTION:

                                              12). Click: FILE - AUTOMATE - BATCH. This will bring up the BATCH panel.
                                              13). Batch settings (This is a lenghty one).

                                              PLAY:
                                              SET = RESIZE
                                              ACTION = 80 x 80

                                              SOURCE = FOLDER
                                              CHOOSE = TODO (folder previously created in step #2 - contains your original images.).
                                              I leave the three boxes unchecked.

                                              DESTINATION = FOLDER
                                              CHOOSE = DONE (second folder previously created in step #2.).
                                              I leave the box unchecked.

                                              FILE NAMING
                                              DOCUMENT NAME + EXTENSION

                                              COMPATIBILITY I leave both unchecked.

                                              ERRORS = STOP ON ERRORS. You may choose LOG ERRORS if you like.

                                              14). Click OK and watch the images fly.

                                              If you have them in series and numbered correctly (001.jpg, 002, 003, ###) then sit back and watch the movie. (JK)

How can I get to ~4000bytes for a thumb and still have good quality? For the lowest quality jpeg, which is pixelated, I can only get to ~5000 bytes.
                                                You're not doing something right. Are you using the 'save for web' feature? the compressions etting at 40 should do well.

                                                  one problem with PS is that you can't watermark a photoset in a batch if the set includes both portrait and landscape format images, the action will record that you placed the watermark image/text this many pixels down and this many from the right. if somebody knows how please post the info.

                                                      There is most likely another way around that - what I do is separate landscape and portrait and run two batches.

                                                      I tend to do all the images for all my galleries, or whatever, at once - the TODO folder usually has 1000+ images in it.

                                                        yeah that's what i do too but would be better if u could do an action where the watermark gets placed at the bottom in the correct place regardless of the size or format of the image.

                                                              photoshop is an invaluable tool, there is no question about that....but for people that don't feel like doing 20-30 steps to get one thing done there are programs like xat and arles that get shit done very fast, and already have tons presets for these exact actions

                                                              and just for the record, i do use photoshop more than any other image tool, i just find it easier to use arles or xat for 2 things, watermarking batches and optimizing batches

                                                                or just use Arles

                                                                load up arles, show it the images and it does it all in about 1 minute...no need for all the steps involved with photoshop...and it even optimizes

                                                                photoshop is an invaluable tool, there is no question about that....but for people that don't feel like doing 20-30 steps to get one thing done there are programs like xat and arles that get shit done very fast, and already have tons presets for these exact actions

                                                                and just for the record, i do use photoshop more than any other image tool, i just find it easier to use arles or xat for 2 things, watermarking batches and optimizing batches
                                                                ya i gotcha bro, i just like being able to do everything in one program...so basically i've gotten pretty good at all the little shit pshop offers but not many utilize, usually because its pretty difficult to figure it all out...

                                                                but hey, resizing, enhancing, hue/saturation manipulations, unsharp masking percentages, canvas size, resolution drop, image resize, save for web, reduce size, save thumbnail, close file, once you get your actions built and you can do all of this in the click of a button, it saves me endless amounts of time...

                                                                did 9,000 images in 3 days, and photos from over 6 years ago, now they are all 2 different sizes, watermarked, thumbed, and each set is enchanced differently based on their original formats (blending levels / brightness / color settings / lighting levels / etc.)

                                                                everyone has their own way

                                                                FF

Photoshop doesn't have artificial intelligence. i think i have an idea that i've never tried before, changing the measurements to % instead of pixels.

                                                                  well this is a good thread to ask this in - you have a folder of pics that are not in the order you'd like them, is there a way in Photoshop or any other graphics program to re-order them?

                                                                    make two patterns... in my case i do 900x600s and 600x900s, with associated actions, applying two different watermarks (same watermark, just 2 differnet patterns). Quite often, you'll just have to record a quick action to adjust canvas sizes and image sizes if you get a folder with 100 images w/ 100 different sizes, but that is rare.
