Why are people who are named John sometimes called Jack?

all that makes sense..but I never got the John = Jack thing.

You call William Billy for short etc...but how is Jack a shorter version of John when John is already a shorter version of Johnathan? LOL

i agree, when i was a child i thought we had 2 previous presidents, jack kennedy and john f kennedy, did not make sense to me either
