I asked the same question a few weeks ago, and was recommended Wrox's "Beginning PHP4".

          It really Wrox!

PHP can be done in many ways, many choose to smoke it.... some choose to snort it, no matter which way you choose to ingest it, it alwys makes for a colorful evening, especially if you get pulled over by the LAPD....

                      Hey midget,

Check out zend.com - they have a section on their site called 'community' that has a lot of useful tutorials. The stuff isn't that hard. One nice thing about PHP is that there's a function for everything.

I started a month ago and just finished a nice little program to manage images as blob fields in a mysql table, then I tried using it to make a thumbnail gallery and it was slow as hell, so back to the drawing board for me.

why study PHP if there are so many programmers in the eastern countries that are REALLY good BUT prices are REALLY low ... something about 6 - 8 USD / per hour...

I am one of them .. but I know a lot of guys looking for a job.

and projects like http://www.faces.md - is what we do within 3-4 days.

I am from Moldova, and if you have any job, please contact me I will find the best deal for you.

he said he wants to learn. he didn't say he wants to know it so he can compete against the people undercutting the market with sub-par prices.

Another good book is Core PHP programming by Leon Atkinson. As well there is a good MySQL book by Paul Dubois (titled MySQL).

You can also take a look at http://www.e-gineer.com for some other PHP information in addition to the resources that have already been suggested to you.
