Best explanation I've heard many years ago while in college is it has to do with lineage. A man with different women can still confirm whose child may result from sex, thus the passing along of family assets. Female with several men, who knows who the child belongs too.

Of course that doesn't apply with today's technologies, but to a degree can explain where the tradition started
