Question - Cable Modem Upload Speeds

One place I test my modem speed it shows:
    «1068 down «358 up
    another place it shows:
    «3450 down «351 up

BUT! when I upload to two different servers at two different data centers I get a constant average speed of 46-65kbps upload speed.

I just upgraded my comcast account to have a 4mpps down / 396k up speed.. They say that that is the UP TO speed for the transfers, and there is no guarantee on it..

So my question is how do I make sure it's not the host or something along the way that is slowing my transfer rate down, and what can I do to increas the speed uploading..

I have comcast cable.. Anyone have any tricks or solutions?

Make sure you're converting bits to bytes and not getting confused between the two. 45-65 kilobytes per second is 360-520 kilobits. (8 bits in a byte).
    I do PHP, bitch.

Apart from the standard WinXP config that releases about 5% of your b/w there are no 'tricks' as such to increase your upload speak. There are illegal ways like uncapping your modem, but when you get caught [usually takes a few hours] don't expect to ever get cable/broadband again.

The 396k pretty much caps you off at 40kb-45kb/s upload speed.
4mbps down could get you as fast as 460-500kb/s down depending on how accurate comcast are.

Don't trust those modem speed tests, alot of them simply can't handle the load of faster connections which is why you're getting funky results.

As for slower speeds, that's all dependent on routers and how your traffic is relayed around the internet, can't really do anything about that.

Thanks.. I appreciat the input alot!

I hear MCI is having outages that are affecting connectivity and stability as well so that can affect things alot too..

Look for a proggie called DrTCP. Play around with it and read there forumns. It increased my cable modem speed a lot, I just don't remember where I got it from...lol It's been a while since I had to adjust anything, but it lets you tweak the settings in Windows to maxamize your throughput.
