    Software design question/registration

I am going to license a piece of software and sell it offline packaged and on a cd. Is there a way to "register" the software so that I can see how many installs it has without having to complicate the duplication/packaging process and include a unique serial with each unit.
SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60. Let me repeat... A 120 x 60 button and no more that 3 lines of DEFAULT SIZE AND COLOR text.

You could base it on a combination of identifiers based on the machine it is installed on, something like an md5 checksum of the hard drive serial number, and modem / lan MAC address. It would be flawed when they change hardware and reinstalled, but other then that, i can't think of any other ways to do it off hand.
