Purchasing a Server..

I am on a 2-way cable connection.. same upload as download speed, and I am thinking of running my own server from home..
I have a site already made in ASP, so Im going to set up ASP Linux 3.0 on it. Now I have alot of questions..
1st of all..

IS IT WORTH IT?
Buying a 1000mhz server with 512 ram, and having a cable connection.. would it work? how fast would it be?

COULD it handle lets say 500,000-3,000,000 hits/month?
(My site, my friends sites, etc)?

I am a newbie when it comes to hosting, so I have no idea what server to buy yet, etc..
but is it worth doing..?

Don't even think about hosting your own site unless you have AT LEAST a 3MB ADSL conncection.(if you want it to be decent). But if you are going to host on a cable connection than #1 its gonna be SLOOW, #2 call your ISP and find out whats your monthly bandwidth and how much would you pay if you go over the premited amount. If its a home cable connection than there is usualy very little bandwidth, like 5GBmonth or so...

In short...it all comes down to the bandwidth. The more per month, the better.

That server could easily handle that much traffic if you installed Linux on it. Hell, I was doing a lot more than that on a K6-2/550 with 512 megs of ram. I moved up to a shitty 1 GHz celery tho... I didn't pay for it so I guess I can't bitch that much...

And fuck, you can run off a T1 just fine. I've been running on one for almost 2 years, until we got fiber in... it's all in how you manage your bandwidth... Anyone tells you you can't run a serious adult biz on a T1 is a fucking moron... send me their names so I can spray them with my fart juice...

That's not the thing, I know the server is reliable...but the speed..

I mean Im on just regular cable..and my friend says the ISP company doesnt put a cap on it, so you have however much bandwith you want..

1st) read the agreement if after that you still have questions then reread it and so on until you find that servers arent allowed

2nd) your upload is capped at 40kb/s

I hate to say things can't be done but this is one of them. Well, let me rephrase that...

You can but you shouldnt with a real server. If you just have to do it don't buy a big server for it, it would be overkill. A cable connection is only worth serving off of a personal computer. My BW is capped at 133kbs so yours might be lower or higher.

Check out Bandwidth.com for some decent prices on a T1 or a dedicated 2way dsl connection. That's what you really need.

Yeah but a T1 isn't a home use digital cable modem. They'll have him shut off before he can grab his ankles. If you're that new you shouldn't be hosting anyways - just pick someone to do it for you. The idea sounds nice because we're all geeks and like the hardware - however, nothing in that process will MAKE YOU MONEY. After all, isn't this about generating income?

Focus on building sites and traffiking them - fuck all with the hosting, leave that up to a hosting company.

I'm sure your cable comp will tell you that you need to pay for whatever they have that passes as a business acct, just like most DSL companies. It might not be in the TOS you have personally but go to their site or call 'em up...

And if you get a heavy period we're betting a lot of the surfers are going to get a 404. Some locals have tried that and got just those results.

I agree with Brad,

First off most cable and dsl customers are regular home based consumers, meaning if it goes down its not a huge issue like a business customer who has a T-1 T-3 ect.., If you are going to do it with sites generating income, at least get a T-1 or a couple of T-1's for redundancy.

A Cable or DSL server would be fine for you and a couple of friends home pages, but I wouldnt put a thing generating income on it...

Rogers@Home once shut me down for having services on my computer. Of course there was a warning but I ignored it. Was down for about 2 days.

Yeah, your server can handle it, your bandwidth is another issue altogether. Honestly, look and see if you can get a T1 if you don't wanna pay for hosting elsewhere. You can, in some areas including the backwoods ass place I live in, get a T1 for around $1250/mo including a router for around $1250/mo for a 2 year contract... hell you might get it cheaper... should be able to generate enough income to pay for that with your own server...
