just use a firewall

Hardware firewall, software zonealarm to monitor what goes on the net.

Update patches, install good virus program like kaspersky.

When you share folders, share it but WITH password, so not the default EASY SHARE.

This way on other desltops/laptops you can make a new network connection, and point to the HDD, fill in user/pass and you won't have todo it again. But other users can not access the HDD anymore.

Then you are pretty safe IMO.
