    How does dedicated hosting work?

Thinking about getting my own box and off of shared.

How does that work? Do I just buy a server and ship it to someplace to stick it on a rack and I'm on my own? The only help they give is to reboot the server if I ask?

And what kind of a difference does that make in bandwith price? Do you pay a much lower bandwith price since you own the box, or not at all?

if you plan on dedicated, then all you have to do is rent a server and use it. You do get many advantages by going dedicated, your speed improves thus improving your sales.

Difference in BW price? it all depends on what do you buy/rent, but in general, yes, you do get a lot more bang for your buck on dedicated...

                      Shop around.

                      Check everyone's prices and backbone.

                      Ask around.

and most of all check the services , or should i say the aftersales services.

so that you don't end up in the weekend with a dead server and have to wait until after the weekend to get somebody to fix it for you

make sure you get 24/7 services and check that they use more than one backbone to manny telcompanies are going down these days atleast on this site of the ocean.

The first dedicated server that we had was a descktop computer we setup ourselves and just delivered it to the host where it sat on his internet pipe for a monthly fee.

The second dedicated server we got was about 5 or 6 years ago. We had to pay $2000 for the box but the host built it, installed FreeBSD, Apache and all the softare. He keeps it running, but we have root access and can install anything we want on it ourselves. We pay a flat monthly fee for this with no bandwidth charges.

Nowadays you can get a dedicated server with no up front fee, just monthly bandwidth charges starting at under $200, but you pay per GByte.

Just make sure you get a unix server, either Linux or FreeBSD with Apache, MySQL, PHP and SSL. When our FreeBSD server went online, it stayed up for about 2 years before we restarted the OS. It never crashes.

Also make sure you get some kind of telnet access or SSH. Root access is nice to have but a lot of hosts won't give it to you because they don't trust you. But most unix software can only be installed as root.
