Yikes! This could be a problem.

Hurricane Ivan is now a Category 4 storm, with sustained winds of 140 mph. Hurricane winds stretch out 70 miles from the center.

It's smaller and moving faster than Frances, thankfully, but it's still big and strong. This bears a great deal of further watching. Again, this morning's models are divided on the US strike, but I'm betting that after it hits Florida's keys and southern border that it heads into the Gulf.

        Ack!

Hopefully this one won't be a Cat.4 when and if it hits Mississippi. If it is, I hope he not only has a good basement, but also good hurricane insurance.

No basements in Mississippi- too close to sea level.

I am seriously wanting to get my family out of here after this year's storms. I've lived here 25 years (on the Gulf coast of FL, two counties north of Tampa) and I've never seen anything like this. The closest we've ever come before to a hit was Elena, and she just stalled in the gulf for 3 days-never got closer than 80 miles offshore.

florida has been due a few of these for a long while unfortunately.

since the inception of model forecasting, 24 full hurricanes have hit, 10 tropical storms and i think 6 tropical depressions.

if memory serves me correctly, this has been a span of 50 years.

He's on an Air Force base in an all cement block building - otherwise I'd be making him come home if it heads to the gulf

The hurricane recon planes into the gulf fly from his base. They have their own water supply, power generating plant, etc. Plus he LOVES "roughing" it. Sometimes I wonder if he's really mine.
