When the computer is botting keep hitting the F8 key (I think thats the right one... it should take you to a list of startup modes... arrow key to normal startup. If it refuses to staart its because you have something wrong.

Oh oh! The hubby said using the control key alone on some systems might be better. Differt systems react differently to the win98 op system. One or the other should work tho, whether its F8, F6 (as someone else suggested) or the CTRL key.

Yeah some systems you have to hold down the shift key from when you turn it on....... Sometimes you have to hit the key a few times, I know its either F6 or F8 ..... doesnt happen to me often, so my memory is a little shady

if it is starting in safe mode, it is trying to tell you something.

First off, at boot, hit F8 until it gives you start up methods, and pick step-by-step confirmation so you can see if there is a problem in your config.sys or autoexec.bat or windows startup.

If no problems there, right click "My Computer" and click properties on drop down menu. Then check your device manager and see if it points out a hardware problem

also go check your performance tab, verify that it says system is configured for optimal performance

my question would be, when did this start happening, and what was the last thing you did before this started happening, cuz you did do something most likely

Maybe you should start shutting down your computer the "right way" ?
Start -> Shut Down -> Shut Down

And don't press the power button when you are still in windows.

I guess that might be a problem although I dont think you're a complete newbie. Could be because of some software/hardware conflicts.

I believe windows creates .log files on your C:\ drive and prints there all the errors and stuff. You might want to check those.

Lastly, you might want to try and search for PC related message boards. You'll get a much wiser answer, IMO.

Gemini and Pipecrew are right, but it's F8 for sure. so shut down then when puters rebooting keep hitting F8 then it will boot in safe mode, then you can change it to Normal mode, and then get back to work

Ive tried about 6 or 7 times and F8 F6 and CTRL didnt work. Ive had this computer for 5 years and it has happened before. Im sure in the past I have just restarted it and it fixed itself but this time its not This is so frustrating. Thanks for the help though. If these suggestions dont work I dont know what the hell will.

win98 will sometimes flip over to the safemode for God only knows what reason. Had it happen a few times when there wasn't a darn thing wrong other than maybe a hard restart from a browser lockup etc. They seem to have fixed it for the most part at some point thru the updates.

Shut it down and let it rest for about 20 mins or so and retry the boot. If it goes to safemode then shut it back down and retry the different startup keys.

OR, reinstall win98 over the existing copy and then go redo the updates and patches. Thats a last ditch effort.

Might try a combo of the CTRL + F keys before a reinstall. We found a lot of weird ways different computers dealt with gates folly. lol

Have you checked the control panel yet like the other guy said? It won't go out of safe mode if you have a corrupted driver or something.

Ok well I restarted and kept clicking F8 .... The option came up.

                                      Choose what mode:

                                      1) Normal
                                      2) blah
                                      3) Safe Mode

                                      etc...

I chose number 1 and pressed enter. It still went into the safe mode format except it doesnt say safe mode in the four corners of the screen now. Ill give it a rest like you say and see what happens but damn this is soooo annoying

How do I check for that? I looked in the "system" and "network" and couldnt figure out anything to do. I probably don't know much about computers I guess.

if the safe mode words aren't in the corner you aren't in safe mode. if the colors are fucked up you need to set your display properties in the control panel under 'display' or right click on the desktop and 'properties' .. if you are not able to turn up the resolution or color you need to reinstall your video card drivers. check cp 'system' for the brand or open up the box and take a look at the brand and version number go to their website, download, install, change display properties.

Press the space bar when you are booting up - Your system will use the last good boot settings and you should be able to fully boot your system up then.

                                              Click on:

                                              Start
                                              Settings
                                              Control panel

                                              Device Manager

Look for items that have yellow exclamation points beside them.

(It might be slightly different depending on what version of Windows you have.)

Win98 is the worst OS M$ ever came up with. Win2k is salvation...

your best bet is to format c: and install Win2K Pro.

and get a new graphics card and monitor while you're at it.

After you get it fixed go to microsoft site and do a search for power toys, download Tweak it and install it.... then set it up to
delay boot up say for 3 seconds..... then every time you reboot or turn on the computer that menu will come up....
                                                          Normal
                                                          safe
                                                          command line
                                                          step by step

it will default to 30 delay.... I have mine set for 3 seconds....
you can also hit enter and it will boot.... Tweak it has a bunch of other use full stuff...
